No duds on the original release containing 13 tracks. "Gula Gula" [Chilluminati Mix] and "Any Other Name" (heard on the score from American Beauty) are both great inclusions. Again, it would be nice to have these albums mixed, but the separated tracks allow the listener to easily formulate their own personal playlist of favorites. Not the type of Cafe Del Mar I enjoy. Customer Rating: Summary: Scandalously dismal Comment: Annoyingly, the lowest rating I can offer is ONE STAR. Way too much. How on earth is it possible to produce such complete drivel. From the first tedious 30 seconds of track one (I can't be bothered to turn the CD box over to see what the 'track' is called ... it simply doesnt matter), one's heart drops as you simply know you have been sold a total dog. Make no mistake this is a totally uninspired depressing groove-free load of tosh. The price they charge for these things is also incredible. For the cost I expect something really decent ... I have the receipt, and its going back. Generally CD's of this type are a bit of a lottery, I sense this is one CD in this series that never should have made it out of the re-cycling bin. Surely its a mistake! In a word, R U B B I S H . Customer Rating: Summary: unique downtemp grooves Comment: A year after buying Vol. 7 and Vol. 8, I still find myself spinning these grooves up. Editorial Reviews: This latest installment in the Café del Mar series, designed to defray the effects of Ibizan-type madness (or usher some in), sees the del Mar folks weaving together their most mature, confident, and well-placed aural massage yet. Sometimes it rolls across the ears like a slow, steamy, romantic rubdown, as on Digby Jones's "Piña Colada (Jazz Mix)," and at other times it evokes deep sunrise spiritualism, as on Mari Boine's superb "Gula Gula (Chillumanti Mix)." There are even some poignant and melancholic pressure points, such as Hollywood fave Thomas Newman's haunting "Any Other Name" (last heard on the American Beauty soundtrack). Also seemingly bound for soundtrack inclusion is Dido's "Worthless," which overflows with piano-tinged, jazzy trip-hop flavor. Whether used as a chill-out album, a warm-up collection, a record to dine with, or a romantic backdrop, Café del Mar, Vol. 8 will find good use in most contemporary lifestyles. --Steffan Chirazi
