Customer Rating: Summary: Prophetic Music With Soul and Heart Comment: Marvin Gaye's classic is still relevant today. His peon to brotherhood, peace, ecology, faith, and hope, is even more relevant in an age where music appeals to hedonism and our prejudices. This is music that raises the soul, opens your heart, and reconnects you to important human values. This should be required listening on the short list of of American culture - Wizard of Oz, Citzen Kane, Huck Finn, etc.... Recorded over 30 years ago, it continues to echo across time for its music and message. Take a break from a lot of forgetable music that masquerades as entertainment and come in for some real content here.
Customer Rating: Summary: This version is the one to get Comment: many different versions of this CLASSIC album are available....this is the one to get.Bonus tracks , a near complete concert, two different mixes of the actual album.....snatch it up before it goes away.
Customer Rating: Summary: A true Masterpiece! Comment: This album was and still is essential to the problems that existed and still do exist in the world to this day. There could not have been a better album recorded from a political and social standpoint. Marvin left the world with a lot to think about when he recorded this masterpiece back in 71. It was a fantastic thing for Motown to do by remastering this classic album. I just wish Marvin was still alive to see how his work influenced a lot of fans as well as artist.
Customer Rating: Summary: THE POWER OF WORDS Comment: Being a resident of the DC/BALTIMORE area, a military veteran, a proud parent,a lifetime music lover, words cannot express how the song "WHAT'S GOING ON" continues to resonate thru out the inner cities of america,MARVIN GAYE is the man!!!he clearly got the message ,and give a gift that is powerful.an alltime soul classic ,that should be in any solid cd collection period......TIMELESS
Customer Rating: Summary: Quintessential Marvin Comment: For the serious MG fan, this is a must have. Why? Because the additional material is more than a filler used to drive up the profit in the CD. The "Original Detroit Mix" seems only slightly different than the "Original LP" release, but after listening a few times, the differences are subtle, but distinct. I like them both, but think I would have also chosen the "Original LP" release over the original mix. The live material is also nice. The recording is clean and the band tight. Can I get a right on, brother!

Marvin Gaye's What's Going On may be the most powerful soul record ever made. On this Deluxe Edition, the original recording is embellished with an alternate Detroit Mix of the album (which is almost equally strong) and a previously unreleased recording of Gaye's live performance at the Kennedy Center in 1972. It also includes brilliant liner notes, song lyrics, and a mini-essay by Smokey Robinson, who calls What's Going On his favorite album of all time. The raw emotionality of the live disc further demonstrates Gaye's commitment to his own sentiments and captures the longing and sadness that permeate the album. Gaye went into uncharted R&B territory on What's Going On: leaving love ballads behind, he explored social commentary from an intimate personal perspective. The world weighed heavy on his heart, and the album brings home the confusion of the Vietnam era, when America the Beautiful began to seem a bit ugly. Armed with only his heart and his voice, Marvin Gaye took on Uncle Sam, and won over the hearts of many Americans. --Lizz Mendez Berry
