Summary: Musical Excellence
Comment: I cannot stop listening to this fine CD which is two record albums combined: Cugat's Favorite Rumbas (Columbia, 1954) and Mambo at the Waldorf (Columbia, 1955). The compositions are classic and the sheer technical exuberance of Cugat's orchestra is astounding.
If you like the Buena Vista Social Club, these mambos will absolutely drive you crazy. The rumbas recall extravagant Hollywood dance numbers of the war years and are equally indelible. Duerme, Begin the Beguine, Para Vigo Me Voy, Acercate Mas, and more, feature excellent vocals. You may think Xavier Cugat old and dead, that his tunes were just schmaltz, but try these out on your player and see what made his name a household word.

Summary: My Opinion
Comment: I would love to be the person to select which songs to put on the CD. On this CD, I would definitely NOT have selections #5,6 10 and 11. I would probably not have #2,8 and 12. I would have all the rest and maybe have it twice with Begin the Beguine, Say Si Si, Besame Mucho, Mambo Gallego and Mambo Gordo [3 times]. I love these songs and the way Cugat has orchestrated them. My favorite rumba of all times--Siboney, is not on this CD. Xavier Cugat has recorded at least 5 different renditions of SIBONEY and every one of them is superb. Ernesto Lecuona would be proud [the composer of Siboney].

Summary: MOST ARE GOOD___A FEW BAD
Comment: The first half of the album, 4 or 5 of the songs should be left off of the CD---- however many are my favorites like Begin the Beguine, Green Eyes,Say Si Si, and especially Besame Mucho are great. The second part of the album [Mambo at the Waldorf], all are excellent--- my favorite being Mambo Gordo. Thank you.
