Customer Rating: Summary: Good, With One Flaw Comment: This is actually a good Pretenders compilation, my one complaint would be that they didn't include "My City Was Gone", that seems like a necessary track. That aside, this compilation gathers together most of the hits and a few rarities, as well. Probably best for casual fans, or if you are just getting into The Pretenders, it's a good start.
Customer Rating: Summary: music snobs back off Comment: After hearing a radio show on the Pretenders I realized the huge hole in my music library caused by having no album from this prolific band. I signed in to Amazon and spent much of the evening listening to samples and reading reviews of each album. I ordered this album even though many music snobs stated that doing so is selling out to the punk roots of the Pretenders; I respectfully disagree. What this album does is serve as an exemplar of the many stages that this great band has gone through during their long and fruitful career. It creates a complete picture better than most one album sets and is cheaper than buying six different albums. For most people this is the best value and thus the best buy from the Pretenders.
Customer Rating: Summary: A message of love Comment: I really don't listen to a lot of my favorite bands from the '80s so much nowadays but one of the few bands from my adolescent that I still listen to is The Pretenders. Their music is a melodic mix of pop and punk. Chrissie Hyndes still sounds as good now as she did when I first heard her as a child. I personally think the band's GREATEST HITS cd is very good even if they didn't include one of my favorite songs "Revolution". I definitely think that GREATEST HITS is vastly superior over the band's singles compilation due to production and that the collection includes some of their more recent material from the '90s. My personal favorite Pretenders song will always be the beautiful ballad "Hymn to Her". That song always moves me. Love the pop hooks. I initially never cared much for "Brass in Pocket" (which I have heard that it is Chrissie Hynde's least favorite song) but as I get older, the song has really grown on me. I love the opening line and the beat. The only two songs I don't particularly care for on the compilation is the duets with UB40. I never liked UB40 to begin with. The songs were rubbish to me. Overall great compilation by one of my favorite bands of my childhood.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Pretenders-A Working Band That Just Has The Look Comment: I don't know why but when I think of Chrissie Hynde, I am reminded of Robert Plant. Led Zep plucked Robert out of some obscure English countryside village and blasted him off to Rock and Roll nobility. He had the look and he could dish it out. That's exactly why Chrissie brings up Robert Plant to me and vice versa. Chrissie was admitedly in some minor Ohio suburban laundromat watching the machine spin in it's monotonous cadence but she did have the look and when you buy this cd, The Pretenders Greatest Hits, you will quickly realize that Chrissie has the rock power to blow the roof off any respectable Super 8 in town. My favorite Pretender entries are Talk of the Town, Middle of the Road, and Brass in Pocket. All of these coupled with Chrissie Hynde on lead vocals and guitar is like watching a panther claw down a gazelle-it's sheer power and momentum. As I started to say and now expand, I know this review surrounds the Pretenders but just remember, Robert Plant, Steve Tyler, Steve Perry, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, all have to have the look and the power and Chrissie Hynde has that hands down.

Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent collection Comment: This is an updated collection from the earlier Greatest Hits collection and conatins some of their 90's hits. All Pretenders CDs not equal as their first was just SO good that you'd like to see more from that disc like "Mystery Acheivement" and "Stop Your Sobbing" and less from some later discs. What's here is great music , though, and it's probably a sign that a great band like the Pretenders need 2 discs to squeeze in all their hits, key album tracks, and concert favorites.
