Customer Rating: Summary: This is Rock & Roll Comment: I don't know how many of you were teenagers when this came out but let me tell you the first time you heard this coming through the speakers it was a whole new sound and experience. Who the F#@% are these guys? Changed everything. Don't even hesitate to buy this.
Customer Rating: Summary: The 1st Is Often the Best! Comment: I'm not the biggest Van Halen fan. But there is no denying that this is an excellent record. With all the records they made, somehow, I seriously doubt that I'm alone when I say this first record of theirs is the best. 'Runnin With the Devil' is a really great and energetic opener. 'Eruption' is a nice instrumental. The cover 'You Really Got Me Now' has a great sound. 'Aint Talkin 'Bout Love' is one of the best songs on the record. 'I'm the One' is a bit weaker, but still alright. 'Jamie's Cryin' is a softer, but still really good song. 'Atomic Punk' is strange, but interesting and energetic. 'Feel Your Love' kind of goes against my nature, but it keeps the energetic pace of the record up. 'Little Dreamer' is a good moderate blast song. 'Ice Cream Man' has a huge following, but I will decline comment. 'On Fire' has a surprisingly great energy, and is a great conclusion to this really well done record. Thank goodness Eddie and David are FINALLY back together.
Customer Rating: Summary: RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL ! (Van Halen's debut rocks and rocks and rocks some more) Comment: Van Halen (1978) rocks! It's a hard rock classic, and the best album the band has ever released. It has sold over 10 million copies and introduced the world to Eddie Van Halen's wild guitar pyrotechnics including a new guitar playing technique, (fretboard) tapping. Eddie's brother Alex plays the drums and Michael Anthony plays the bass on this album. Last but not least, the charismatic frontman David Lee Roth provides the over-the-top vocals and wild screams.
Runnin' With The Devil sets the tone for Van Halen with a killer guitar riff and a demonic scream-sing. The first lines of the first song on Van Halen's first album tell the tale.
I live my life like there's no tomorrow
And all I got I had to steal
Least I don't need to beg or borrow
Yes, I'm livin' at a pace that kills
Runnin' with the devil
The electric and blistering guitar solo Eruption follows, and pretty much just blew everybody's mind in 1978. And if that wasn't enough of an entrance, they perfectly nail The Kinks' You Really Got Me with heavy rocking version that makes the song their own. Classic! Ain't Talkin' Bout Love is another smoking guitar classic that rocks hard and adds more desperation and menace into the works. Right out of the gates with four hard rock classics! Yeah! Jamie's Cryin', Feel Your Love Tonight, and Little Dreamer are all rock classics, too, and keep pace with the others here. Atomic Punk and On Fire are solid rockers, and the blues parody Ice Cream Man starts out acoustic before morphing into a wild electric blues free-for-all.
If you get any of Van Halen's albums get this one. A must-have for party rockers, rock guitar fans, or anybody who likes to listen to hard rock music when they're runnin' with the devil.
Customer Rating: Summary: Van Halen the First Album Comment: This is one of my favorite albums of all time. My copy had a few scratches on it, especially after seeing them in concert December 2007 in Las Vegas. They played all the songs off this album and brought back a lot of great memories of the original David Lee Roth when Van Halen was in their prime. The cd was purchased recently (Feb 2008) at amazon and sent in a timely manner.
Customer Rating: Summary: Van Halen!!!, Not Van Hagar!!!! Comment: It is better than I remember it!!!
Just listen to "Eruption" Eddie Van Halen is a guitar icon!

At least half of the songs on Van Halen's eponymous 1978 debut are still considered classics, and the Eddie Van Halen instrumental "Eruption" revolutionized the guitar community by introducing a technique called finger-tapping into the heavy metal lexicon. A magnificent debut for sure, but maybe the band should have held onto a few of their blockbuster tunes to bolster the lean years that started after 1984, and continue to the present day. Regardless, Van Halen amply demonstrate their drive, showmanship, and musicianship throughout, blowing the needle off the scale on such tracks as "You Really Got Me," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Runnin' with the Devil," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." --Jon Wiederhorn
