Summary: There is nothing to be dissapointed about on this cd...
Comment: This is 100% pure traditional western swing, wit ha slightly modern theme. The lyrics have been updated to fit todays lifestyles, even though the music sounds from the early 50's western swing period, the words speak to the audiences of today, you can relate to the music! It's simply brilliant. Sandy's vocal are amazing, his smoooth singing is like velvet, the Mel Torme of western swing. Great music, greta original songs, and yet it all sounnds so vintage. A purrfect cd to cruise around in your hotrod with!

Summary: A work of art...
Comment: This is Big Sandy's musical masterpice. This is stil lwetsern swing, but with deeper lyrics more relivent to todays audiences. The msuic is easier to relate to, because the lyrics speak to you. The instrumentation is still that of bob Wills' western swing combo style. Complete with steel guitar and twangy crooning from the honey voiced Big Sandy. The nest song here is Tequiella Calling. The entire cd is a western swing verison of Frank Sinatra's "Wee Small Hours" cd. A modern true western swing classic. Also noteworthy is the cd's lone instrumental track, the excellent Steel of the night! Great cd, every track swings, and is full of mystery and thought...

Summary: One of Big Sandy's best 3 cd's...
Comment: The other two are
Jumpin' From Six To Six, and It's time.

This was Big Sandy's finest cd(up until his latest It's Time, which was even better then Night Tide). Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys really swing on this exellent cd, and Lee Jeffries highly appealing and sophistocated steel guitar work shows equal skills in western swing, rockabilly and jazz styles. Primarily this is a western swing set, with a large dose of rockabilly mixed in. It is very upbeat most of the time, but there are some mellow moments too, but the band shines thru the entire cd, and Sandy's smooth crooning is exellent.

This cd isn't as wacky as per say "Swingin' West"(which was more of a Bob Wills meets Louis Jordan type album. This cd is more like Wills' brothers' more sophistocated band Billy Jack Wills. Less howling and goofing around, but still fun, energetic, exciting. Some of the many exellent original that sound from 1954 are Tequiela Calling, Night Tide, In The steel Of The Night(like Sleepwaker). All the tuens are exellent falling between western swing, hillbilly boogie, jazz and rockabilly.

A stunning release, and one wrthy of many repeated listenings.

Summary: Rich Kienzle doesn't know a thing, bout' western swing!
Comment: Ignore the ignorant review by the bitter Rich Kienzle, he obviosly woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or something, or maybe he's got it in for big people, or Mexicans. In anycase the review from Amazon is not accurate.

Summary: I loved it.
Comment: I actually enjoy this more than "feeling kind of lucky."
Songs like 'Give your lovin to me,'I think of you,' 'Nothing to lose,' and 'Let her know' are ones you'll go to again and again and again. The rest of the tracks are tight and solid. This one has a more rockabilly feel than 'kinda lucky.' I don't have any of Big Sandy's other CD's but I look forward to increasing my coolection.

Editorial Reviews:

Any retro band faces a conundrum: the risk that their original songs will pale next to the oldies they interpret. Such is the case with Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys. After a strong HighTone debut (Jumping from 6 to 6) and follow-up (Swingin' West), they began to vacillate. Both a solo doo-wop effort from Sandy (Dedicated to You) and a Fly-Rite Boys instrumental album were outstanding, but now the past three full-group albums have faltered under the weight of weak original material. Robert (Big Sandy) Williams's relaxed, sincere vocals and the guitar-steel duo of Ashley Kingman and Lee Jeffriess remain the band's heart and soul. Yet try as he might, Williams's songwriting, exemplified here by "Tequila Calling," "I Think of You," and seven others, has yet to rise beyond a beginner's level. More puzzling is the listlessness that permeates the entire record, even the two instrumentals ("In the Steel of the Night" and "South Bay Stomp") and a cover of Texas Western Swing icon Cliff Bruner's "My Time Will Come Someday." It's depressing to hear such undeniable talent continue to create albums so utterly mundane. --Rich Kienzle
