Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: NOTHING BUT PERCUSSION Comment: HOSSAM RAMZY IS A MASTER OF PLAYING NATIVE MIDDLE EASTERN PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. THIS WHOLE CD IS ALL PERCUSSION, NO HORNS, STRIINGS, OR ANYTHING ELSE. IT IS RAW, PRIMITIVE MUSIC, AND IT IS GREAT. I AM NOT A BELLY DANCER, SO I DON'T KLNOW HOW IT STACKS UP AGAINST OTHER BELLY DANCING MUSIC, BUT I ENJOY HEARING THIS MUSIC. IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES TO LISTEN TO WHEN I AM DOING CARDIO EXERCISE OR RUNNING, IT REALLY GETS YOU MOVING. I WISH I HAD A FEZ TO WEAR WHEN I HEAR THIS STUFF. Customer Rating: Summary: Cannot help but move those hips with this music. Comment: Once you start listening to the first track, you cannot help but start dancing - moving those hips. Just imagine being inside an Egyptian cafe and smelling ciggarette smoke, and watching the bellydancing under a dark red and blue light. Sipping on some expresso coffee. This CD can create that visual image- as the SOLO percussion of Hossam Ramzy is unmistakenly the best dance music. It is ok to dance to this hot music. Customer Rating: Summary: a lot of groove Comment: i love this cd, because i actually lst 8 kilos of fat, just trying to do the bellydancing routine. its a phenomenon that not only women should do, but i think men should learn as well. being a percussion CD, it is great that it slows down and picks p tempo in instants. i wonder if it is real world music, or new age? could anyone halp me out? Editorial Reviews: If you think belly-dancing music is simple, this CD from Cairo-born percussionist Hossam Ramzy, the leader of Pharaoh's Egyptian Ensemble (he also toured with Robert Plant and Debbie Harry), will correct that assumption. Ramzy is a master of the darbouka, the Egyptian version of the tabla; the title of this CD is actually an inverted play on words for "solo tabla." It contains about 45 minutes of intricate and ingenious pre-Islamic, Arabic, and world-beat-influenced solos and rhythms. With other percussion instruments supporting the darbouka, Ramzy creates a fresh, fertile crescent of sound stretching from the Nile to the Middle East, Morocco, and beyond. The track "Brazilian Pearls" features samba-fied grooves thrown in for good measure. An informative booklet details the rhythms of these Saharan syncopations, from "West Naima (Naima's Hip)" to "Samya's Solo." With stealth and skill, Hossam Ramzy shows us the legacy of his land through the belly dancer's hypnotic hips. --Eugene Holley Jr.
