Summary: Talk about late to the party!
Comment: I just got this this week. I had only heard one song from it before that. This album had somehow not been on my radar depsite me being a pretty serious Crue fan. I was very surprised to find that I liked this and only skipped over one song. The whole thing is good, front to back, really. If you have overlooked this album, shame on you. Shame on me for not getting it sooner.

Summary: Wow, I overlooked this one...
Comment: I never really listened to this album all the way through this is a really, great album I like it much better then SOLA. The songs are catchy and have enough hooks to make Kareem Abdul JaBaar blush. I read this was the album they wanted to put out after Dr. Feelgood, which would have been a really good call. This is pure sleeze pop-metal and I could listen to the album from start to finish. Punched In The Teeth and the cover of White Punks on Dope, Drag Strip, Hollywood Ending are my favorite songs off this nearly perfect album. This is officially my 3rd favorite Crue album now.

Comment: It sounds like Motley and that's the problem. It's better than the Saints of LA, I'll admit that. I liked their self titled with Corabi because they took chances with it by creating an all-new sound for themselves. They weren't afraid to take that chance and they pulled off agood record for it. IMO, by taking a step back for New Tatoo and trying to re-visit their 80's Dr. Feelgood era sound, they suffer for it. While this is not their best record, it's still better than most of the music out their right now. Recommended, but only after you get their back catalog first.

Summary: Good time rawk 'n' roll comeback
Comment: Circa 2000 there weren't that many people expecting that Motley Crue could come up with an album this strong except perhaps the band themselves. Largely ignored in the midst of innumerable nu-metal/metalcore bands treading the boards of the hard rockin' world this album nonetheless provided enough of a spark to reignite Motley Crues career to the extent it was reignited (see the Carnival of Sins live DVD).
Kicking off with Hell on High Heels - which scoots along propelled by a stop start feel and Vince Neil's nasal twang - the album may not scale the heights of Dr Feelgood but it does provide a lot of good time party metal. While track two, Treat Me Like the Dog I Am and the title track instantly lose the album the momentum gained by the rockin' lead cut things improve markedly with a string of throwaway Crue style hard rock songs. Dragstrip Superstar, 1st Band on the Moon and, well pretty much the entire rest of the album apart from She Needs Rock `n' Roll are excellently created hard rock with a good modern sounding production married to the bands tried and tested sleaze. With just enough of a dash of boogie to get toes tapping and heads nodding.
And amidst the throwaway simplistic yet communicative hard rock moves there are some autobiographical lyrics that really do sound and feel 100% genuine given the bands bare all book The Dirt. This aspect of the album was a difference for me, separating this album from pretty much all their previous output in that there is more heartfelt emotion in the lyrics for the rockers on this album than on almost all their actual ballads from previous albums combined (OK, with a couple of exceptions). What saves this aspect of the album from sounding like bitter bile from a band angry at their reduced profile and sales figures is the fact that it doesn't sound forced except perhaps for some of the lyrics to 1st Band on the Moon. Which does smack a touch of the old `back in my day syndrome'.
This is not an album likely to go down as some sort of all conquering classic of the heavy metal genre like Judas Priests Sad Wings of Destiny, Alive by Kiss or any of a number of other essential additions to your collection. But it should more than satisfy fans of the band as it is very much in the vein of Dr Feelgood but with a touch more maturity and a little more introspection, but not enough to spoil the party. A healthy four stars. And no, you don't really notice that the drumming is by Randy Castillo.
