Customer Rating: Summary: Ground breaking Comment: Smoke a bowl or two, then play this CD, and your life will be forever changed. Kemistry. Inner City Life. Sea of Tears. Jah the Seventh Seal. My god. I can't even begin to explain how good this album is. You can listen to it so many times and it only gets better.
Customer Rating: Summary: Completely Redonkulous! Comment: First off, I was fully prepared to appreciate this album being relatively new to D&B (longtime Amon Tobin fan, currently diggin' photek/teebee) and having respect for the rave reviews here. I guess I was caught really off guard by the super cheesy house-esque vocals and cheap synth instrumentation. I am hoping this is a highly specialized album for a niche group of musically impaired D&B listeners, not the ultimate representation of its genre as its touted. I would be embarrassed to have this in my collection in the same way I would be embarrassed to have a Kenny G. album while considering myself a jazzhead. Since when did shmooz become high art? This is anti-soul for those who know the difference and care; at least it makes my soul cringe. Thanks for letting me share.
Customer Rating: Summary: What a cool name for an album! Comment: Well since I'm not in the mode where you just feel like you can't review for _____, I'll review this album as well. Besides, it only took me about 20 seconds or so to write my _________ review for Tago Mago.
Forget the label of "best drum and bass album ever", this album doesn't even come close to resembling pure jungle music. It's got the jungle elements, but Goldie mixes it up. Bigtime. Rooted in that signature jungle sound, he adds singing, atmosphere, sound effects, hard hitting beats (with plenty of accents), it's just so hard to describe. Every sound is placed in a great place, from basslines, hits, vocals, and all of the other stuff. If you like big beats, you will find them here, and these rhythms can get very addicting. It did grow on me, like crack. These rhythms on here grow on you a lot.
Another album that would be perfect for listening to in the downtown area at night, Timeless is urban cool and emotionally enganging. The urban cool thing is always hard for me to describe, but this urban cool thing has always been able to bring up this emotion that sticks with you. Therefore, it's not about the image (even though it sounds like an image thing, it's not), just this certain emotion that lives beneath a lot of people. At least for me. If you can't pinpoint my emotion, than ______ you then. I can make up my own emotions that are personal for me, and for me only. If you don't like that, ______ you.
There are only eight songs, but this album is very long. One of the reasons is that 21 minute epic title track. This song provides a lot of different hooks, intros, segues, and a wildly varied bag of sound effects. State Of Mind features a real drummer and keyboards, with great vocals that give Tracey Thorne (Massive Attack) a run for her money. Saint Angel and Angel, two tracks that share a similar style, are split images of each other. Sensual and You and Me both have beats that are kicked back. Kemistry is a dedication to the Dj of the same name, and Sea Of Tears, you have to hear that one. Not a minute wasted in this nearly 80 minute album.
If you came here thinking it's going to be the pinnacle of mindless drum and bass, it's not. While it's not released here I will never know, but no worries. If you are a fan of electronic music, this album is a must listen.
Also, I was a fool not to get the two cd version. If you can find it, snag that version instead.
10/10
Customer Rating: Summary: the pinnacle of drum and bass Comment: This cd should be hanging on a wall in some museum because it's not just a collection of songs, it's a musical work of art. The emotion and creative effort that Goldie put into this cd is evident on every track. Each track has a story to tell, starting off with the 21 minute epic journey Inner City Life/Pressure/Jah that is worth the price of the cd by itself.
But don't stop there. I've had this cd for many years and every now and then I "rediscover" it and find something new. It's hard to pick favorites but I've played 'Sensual' more times than any other song in my entire life. The track is so unique in it's structure that I've never heard anything quite like it. 'Sensual' is a perfect title but there are sounds that also invoke a profound sense of longing. Just an incredibly emotional song, a piece of art really.
'Sea of Tears' is stunningly beautiful and complex. Birds, ocean sounds, and guitar give this song a nice atmospheric quality. Another unique and startlingly original composition.
'Kemistry' is a drum n' bass tour de force. Rapid drums and deep bass lines pound away and become increasingly intense as the track progresses until a frenzy of bass and drums is pounding you into submission by the end.
I could go on. There's not a weak track on the whole thing. This cd should never be out of print and it is as I write this. Goldie can be proud that he's forever left his mark with this masterpiece of modern music.
Customer Rating: Summary: Masterpiece. An Absolute Classic. Comment: I had heard of this album on numerous occasions by many fans and online reviews as being the cornerstone of the Drum 'n Bass genre. So when I got time I looked through several of the local music stores to find this album, and to my surprise I ran out of luck and out of places to look (For some reason this is one tough cookie to find!). So I ended up downloading the entire album through a file sharing network and burned it.
So one night I was stoned out of my mind and I put this sucker in, having not heard one track until I put it in my car stereo, and let me tell you......
....I was in pure awe.
I listened to both discs without skipping a single track, and the eerie silence of the time it took to change discs made life feel almost naked. It's that good.
The dark, lush soundscapes, the atmosphere that surrounds you, and the feel and the concept of the album is absolutely fantastic. It nearly made me feel as if I were transcending into space, it sounded so unreal.
From the opening crescendo of the epic 21 minute "Timeless" to the closing electonic beats of the Rabbit's Short Attention Span Edit of "Inner City Life," it's hard to believe that something made ten years ago can sound so refreshing. Some of the material on here is very moving and surreal. If you don't know what it's about, it still somehow manages to speak to you. And that is something very few artists have the ability to do, and Goldie does it. Phenomenal.
Take this "Timeless" journey and have your every sensation warmed, chilled, and turned upside down. Whatever it takes, by all means get this album.

Goldie is jungle's most recognizable face. More than any other artist he is synonymous with drum 'n' bass. Aside from owning Metalheadz, a label at the forefront of the genre's development, he has attained public notoriety by producing Timeless, one of the most important LPs of jungle's first five years. Tracks like the moving, urban, epic tale of "Inner City Life"--a tale told in three movements--are among the tunes that define what jungle is. Others, like "Saint Angel," in which Goldie collaborates with fellow production wizards 4 hero, throb with virtually subliminal bass and electronic snarls. Other subdued and equally inspired items, including "State of Mind," combine live upright bass and drum instrumentation with the soulful wails of guest vocalist Lorna Harris. Timeless is exactly as the title implies--a classic. --Daniel Shumate
