Customer Rating: Summary: An amazing soundtrack Comment: This is one of the few soundtracks I know of which is an even deeper expression of the movie than the movie itself. With a wonderful mix of jazz and blues and Gabriel Yared's poignant and haunting score, you feel as if you are traveling just listening to it. It captures period, emotion and narrative completely. "Sounds go through the muscles" Bjork says. This music goes through the soul.
Customer Rating: Summary: I love this film score!!! Comment: This film score was perfectly composed and arranged to follow the story of The Talented Mr. Ripley. If you enjoy film scores/soundtracks I would definitely recommend this one.
Customer Rating: Summary: A musical mirror that reflects the romance and terror of the film Comment: The Soundtrack for "The Talented Mr. Ripley" has a wide range of diverse music that is prefectly matched to the odd Patricia Highsmith story of a poor American psychopath who murders his way up the social ladder in romantic Italy in the 1950s. Yet, Highsmith in her novel and Anthony Minghella directed film, allow Ripley to grow from a nieve young poor boy prone to telling lies to become a handsome young man who has avarice, envy, and unreturned homosexual lust. Thus the challenge for the film makers and the soundtrack is to reflect this gathering pathology and evil in a world of sophistication and beauty. The soundtrack succeeds at the highest levels in this task.
The original music composed by Gabriel Yared is excellent, capturing the romantic moody mystery of the entire film. Sinead O'Connor sings a work composed by Yared, "Cain's Mother, A Lullaby" that is ghostly and sad. Yared's range is excellent, with some of the music building on the jazz themes while other selections build on more classical themes.
The jazz selections are perfect for the era, place and setting of the film. There are selections by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie. Marino Marini performs Guaglione, a modern Italian classic. A portion of Stabat Mater is performed by a young male, Clifford Gurdin.
The music is arranged in the CD in the same chronological order as the film, thus we have more whimsical, light, romantic works in the first third of the CD, more action, contrast, tension, and discordance in the middel third, and then as the sad film moves toward resolution, the music reflects these moods.
Customer Rating: Summary: soundtracks Comment: After I saw the movie I ran out and bought this CD. Now several years later I am sitting on a Saturday afternoon and again realizing how utterly fantastic this music is. Now I want to rent the movie and see it again. The music is haunting, puts you in another dimension and really sends you to Italy in the 50's. Even Matt Damon's "Funny Valentine" is worth listening to. I absolutely love it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Talented Indeed Comment: I love this soundtrack, the music is so haunting and beautiful, especially O'Conners, Lullaby for Cain, it really sums up Ripley and it really stays with you. I think Gabrial Yared is one of the best composers working in the industy today, and Mingella is smart enough to use him on just about every movie he does, this soundtrack, did what all great movie soundtracks do, it fueled the movie and was absolutly perfect, even Damon's rendition of Chet Bakers, My Funny Valentine, was well done, I mean, Matt is no Chet Baker, but who is, verdad? I recommend this to anyone who appreciates a great soundtrack, believe me if you listen to it once you will come back to it again and again, it's that good.

In The Talented Mr. Ripley, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) becomes a master at taking on another's identity, pretty much the same thing he does on the film's soundtrack. Here, the actor does his best to croon like Chet Baker on "My Funny Valentine." Damon lacks the vocal cords to really pull the standard off, but it's still a noteworthy effort. The rest of this soundtrack is a mix of vintage jazz (exceptional cuts by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie), Sinead O'Connor's mystical "A Lullaby for Cain," and a handful of bop tunes played by the Guy Barker International Quintet (one tune even featuring folk legend John Martyn on vocals). As usual, Gabriel Yared's instrumental score is mysterious and reflective, with the occasional jazz element. Unfortunately, only on the track "Ripley" do we get a sense of the composer's varied talent. --Jason Verlinde
