Summary: The Beatnuts - A Musical Massacre
Comment: Rappers/Producers the Beatnuts, a Queens duo consisting of Ju-Ju (A.K.A. Jerry Tineo) & Pyscho Les (A.K.A. Lester Fernandez) fourth album was "A Musical Massacre" (1999). My introduction to the Beatnuts came when I the video for "Off The Books" an excellent collaboration between the Beatnuts and Big Pun (R.I.P.), Cuban Link of Terror Squad which was featured on their "Stone Crazy" (1997) album. Definitely one of my favourite Latin Hip Hop collaborations. My favourite track on this album is the exceptional "Look Around" a classic collaboration between the Beatnuts and M-1/Stic.man of Dead Prez backed by some premium production, and a memorable Stic.man chorus both groups shine. This track is a gem which should not be slept on. The first full length track "Beatnuts Forever" had the duo delivering some grimy rhymes over some on point production. Backed by some smooth vocals from Cheryl Pepsi Riley the Beatnuts rep themselves on "I Love It". "Slam It" is another solid track a three way collaboration between Cuban Link, Common & the Beatnuts. Midway their is a lot of material which had this reviewer hitting skip, another not to be missed track is the single "Watch Out Now" which features some distinct production that worked well with the Beatnuts style. On the closer the Beatnuts collaborate with Magic Juan of Projecto Uno for a purely Latin Hip Hop cut in "Se Acabo". The Beatnuts continue to be active to this day, Pyscho Les recently dropped his debut solo album. The standout track's make "A Musical Massacre" a release worth checking out, and a keeper for Beatnuts fans. 3.5.

Summary: Good, not Classic Beatnuts
Comment: 1999 - 2000 had a strong rising from the underground groups. Mos Def had Ms Fat Booty, Cocoa Brovaz had Super Brooklyn, Pharoahe Monch had Simon Says, MOP had Ante Up (Robbin Hoodz Theory) Common had The Light, Gangstarr Full Clip, Reflection Eternal The Blast. Well, The Beatnuts had Watch Out Now. When I heard that, and saw the line up of guests on the album, Common, Dead Prez, Greg Nice, remember from the Nice and Smooth Days? I thought this was going to be another classic. Even though I was wrong, this album is still solid. A few week moments, but this is better than any of the crunk garbage that's out there, or at that time, the jiggy garbage. For classic Beatnuts, get Stone Crazy and Street Level. Both are hip hop at it's best. But I say, this is an album still worth your money. By the way, don't listen to any reviewer who tells you that Mase is a good artist. Mase makes Vanilla Ice look like Mos Def.

Summary: THE BEATNUTS KEEP IT GOING
Comment: Don't listen to what the previous reviewer "Rod" said about the group, he doesn't know sh*t about good hip hop I mean he gave Nas's I AM album full marks and that album is universally considered average at best, but anyway moving on; The beatnuts released a musical massacre in 99 and while I won't say it was their best album, it sure isn't their worse. This album comes loaded with guest's this time such as tony touch who from this point on would become a regular collaborator, common, cuban link, triple seis and dead prez who come correct on the brilliant track look around where both they and the beatnuts drop some social commentary which brings a nice serious note to the rest of the albums up tempo vibe, plus there is the great track watch out now which J lo jacked the beat from and turned it into Jenny from the block which still makes my stomach turn. This album is a solid effort and while not as good as previous albums it still remains quite faithful to their formula, it is worth a listen.

Summary: Lackluster lyrics+Mediocre beats=Mediocre Album
Comment: Lets face it. The Beatnuts do not specialize in lyrics. They are called the BEATnuts for a reason. In my Opinion, the Beatnuts should become producer and stick to producing, because when they get on the mic, well, let's just say it's not an enjoyable listen. The beats aren't too great either, and to get an above average review the beats would have to be fantastic on this one. The best tracks are those featuring other artists, with the exception of the single "Watch Out Now" which would make a better instramental, but a fantastic track nonetheless.

Editorial Reviews:

On their third full-length project, the crazy Colombian-Dominican rappers from Queens, NY, have set out to murder wack emcees and bury all nonbelievers. The Beatnuts lash out with their self-produced, party-starting beats and signature braggadocio (and usually X-rated) rhymes to commit a Musical Massacre. The flute-filled "Watch Out Now" and "Turn It Out" (featuring Greg Nice) follow the same vein as their 1997 club hit "Off The Books." However, the album's most interesting moment showcases a matured version of the Beatnuts. "Look Around" with Dead Prez finds the duo in a reflective and analytical state, proving that serious or silly, Pscho Les and Ju Ju will always be musical assassins. --Celine Wong
