Summary: Gene Pitney - what a classic performer
Comment: There are songs on this CD which I don't remember ever hearing before. A new favorite is "Yours Until Tomorrow," written by Carole King/Gerry Goffin. I so regret not being able to see Gene Pitney in a live performance before he died several years ago. What a fantastic voice he had. This CD is quite wonderful, and has 25 tracks on it - a long one!

Comment: There is a misconception about the early '60's.
Some think that Rock and Rock started 1n 1955 with Elvis, sat back through the Army years while Doo Wop elbowed hits and nothin' but slicked back hair Boys like Fabian tried to fill the void. Girl groups and novelity songs ruled... NOT SO!
Proof is Gene Pitney
He wrote, produced such great songs like, "I Wanna Love My Life Away","Every Breath I Take". He took Buddy Holly's belief that rock and roll + a sense of vocal ease could make hits. And he did.
Throughout the early '60's, Gene had hit upon hit + recorded with
Liberty label mate Country music icon George Jones.
Maybe Gene should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just for writing

This CD sounds terrific, has great stereo separation. It has an informative booklet. It is worth going to RnR "Mecca"!

Summary: Those were the "good old days"
Comment: Another gift for my husband. He's listened to it two nights in a row while exercising & absolutely loves it---as do I. Quite a collection of Gene's work & well worth every penny spent on it!

Summary: oldies but goodies you're not sick of the second time around...
Comment: Gene Pitney remains a crooner who just doesn't get the respect that he deserves. This album gives us a generous collection of songs by the great Gene Pitney; and that's awesome!
"(I Wanna) Love My Life Away" begins the album and Gene sings this very well. The melody is catchy even today and the backup vocalists sound perfect. I love it! "Town Without Pity" is my favorite song by Gene; he sings this with passion, heart and soul. The musical arrangement lacks nothing, either--"Town Without Pity" is THAT good. Listen also for "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance;" this country flavored ballad gets the best of treatments from Gene who sings in a lower pitched voice that full of warmth and energy.
"Only Love Can Break A Heart" is an achingly beautiful ballad about the angst of heartache that can come with love and romantic breakups; Gene sings this with a heavenly backup chorus to make this number full and complete. "True Love Never Runs Smooth" is another ballad by Gene with a lush musical arrangement; and Gene never sings a superfluous note. Wow!
"It Hurts To Be In Love" is a peppy sounding number that belies the seriousness of the lyrics. Gene sings this with great passion and style; I am very impressed by "It Hurts To be In Love." In addition, "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love" sounds perfect as Gene gives this his all--it works wonderfully.
The album ends with Gene singing "Yours Until Tomorrow." This sad ballad again keeps Gene's vocals squarely in the spotlight; I love it!
Very, very sadly, Gene is no longer with us to sing these ballads and many more. However, his music lives on through rather good albums including this one. Gene Pitney fans will want this for their collections; and this is also a fine starter CD for people who are just discovering the magic of Gene Pitney's artistry.
