Summary: Keep Jr in the Studio Where He Belongs
Comment: While I like most of his recordings, this live album is a collection of about a half a dozen concerts pieced together most likely because he seems unable to completely perform some of his songs. I'm For Love (or the part he performed) was about a minute long. Stick to his studio recordings.

Summary: Let that boy boogie-woogie
Comment: Having seen Hank Jr. in concert back around 1989, I have to say that I enjoy Hank Live even more than I enjoyed Hank live. This is largely because Hank did an acoustic version of A Country Boy Can Survive when I saw him, and that just doesn't begin to compare with the rocking version you find on this live album. I actually picked this album up on a whim right after it was released (I'm no fan of recent country music) - and I loved it. Hank Jr. really knows how to put on a show, which is why he won the Entertainer of the Year award several years running back when he was in his prime. There is a lot of audience interaction and participation on this album, and it really showcases the energy of the crowd at each concert from which tracks were taken. I especially like the way Hank pays tribute to the greats of country music - and not just his father, who was the ultimate honky-tonk man.
After a rousing introduction by Merle Kilgore, Hank gets right down to business with My Name is Bocephus and his account of Workin' for MCA. Next up is a rousing rendition of I Really Like Girls. You can't help but like Hank Jr. by this point in the album, but just in case you don't, Hank pretty much tells you what you can do with your negative opinion in the aptly named If You Don't Like Hank Williams (you probably don't need me to spell it out for you). Things settle down a little bit with the obligatory - yet highly enjoyable - Sweet Home Alabama and La Grange, followed by the blues-infused medley of Trouble in Mind and Short Haired Woman. The latter half of the album is somewhat autobiographical - with plenty of talk about Hank Sr. and Audrey and Hank Jr.'s influences. Some slightly changed lyrics make Man of Steel and I'm For Love lots of fun, after which Hank rolls right into If Heaven Ain't a Lot Like Dixie without a pause. This song plays very well in the South, of course. Hank always likes to get loud and rowdy, unlike most of today's country singers, but at least we can still hear about some of the greats in All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down) - you also get to hear Hank's pretty darn good impression of George Jones. House of the Rising Sun serves as the warm-up for the energetic traps wrapping up the set. The Ride serves as the perfect intro to A Country Boy Can Survive. Hank absolutely raises the roof on this classic, stirring up the blood of even the city-slicker-est of Southern boys. All that's needed after this show-stopper is another tribute to the original Hank, which Bocephus provides with a medley of Family Tradition and Hey Good Lookin'.
The songs on this album are taken from five concert venues (Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, and - go figure - two California shows) Hank Jr. played in the summer of 1986. You would have to search far and wide to find a more energetic audience, as the fans are a constant presence on every track of this album. This is just about my favorite live album of all time.

Comment: ... They have no taste in music. This is a pretty hard cd to find and is awesome. I had the album and made a tape of it and loaned it out to my brother and finially got it back 3 months later wore out. lol So now it's on cd and I can't wait to here it again. ...
