Summary: Good, Modern, Blues Rock
Comment: This debut album by Indigenous, entitled Things We Do, is definitely the best of the bunch. It's popularity certianly reflects that, as I am writing the 100th review for this release.
I had never heard of this band before, and only discovered them thru a friend that is very much into Blues music. She gave me a copy of Things We Do and said "You have to check out this band". I had no expectations of the band or even what type of music they played. She did tell me they were Native American Indians.
Boy, was I surprised by what I heard. Some truely good, modern, Blues Rock. Now I liked Stevie Ray Vaughan as much as anybody, and have a bit of the blues players in my collection. You know, some Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, Ms. Tedeschi, etc. Anyway, I was impressed enough to that I went out and bought 3 more of the bands albums: Circle (2000), Indigenous (2003), and Chasing the Sun (2006).
I'm not surprised that I had never heard of Indigenous. For one, our local radio stations suck. It's either "Mainstream Rock" or "Classic Rock/Oldies". Not much in between. But, if you like Blues Rock or just great guitar music you will probably like this band. Also, if you have a local retail music outlet that offers used CD's for sale, look for this band. You are likely to find them in the bargain section (I did). If not, I can highly recommend their debut as a starting point.

Summary: Indigenous - Good Debut Blues Album
Comment: Indigenous is a blues band comprised of Native American siblings Mato Nanji, Wanbdi, and Pte along with their cousin Horse. The main focus of the band is Mato who is in my opinion one of the best young guitarists to come along in years. His guitar style is very very similar to Stevie Ray Vaughn. His voice is also similar. Unfortunately like many blues bands Indigenous seems to find it difficult to capture the energy of their live shows on their studio albums. "Things We Do" is the band's debut disc and although it is not a mind blowing release it does show a band with tons of potential. The songs are all pretty typical blues with lyrics that are the standard blues clichés, but this is not really a bad thing. It is Mato's guitar and voice that brings the material to a higher level. The instrumental "Holdin Out" and the 2nd track "Got To Tell You" are prime showcases for his guitar prowess. "Things We Do" is a fine debut album from a band that really deserves more attention than they have so far received.

Comment: This is a great blues rock album. If you like music in the vein of Stevie Ray Vaughan, this album is most definitely for you. Mato Nanji's singing and guitar playing are second to none. Check it out. You won't be disappointed!

Summary: Indians play super blues
Comment: I didn't know about Indigenous before I heard them on Amazon.
I just board the 3 albums "Live at Pachyderm Studios", "Things we do" and "Indigenous".
I can only say, that the music gets better for every time I play it.
All 3 albums are SUPERB! Now it can't take long before I'll buy "Circles"

Comment: I think this is what Kenny Wayne was supposed to sound like but falls flat on his now-Lenny-Kravitz-wannabe a** trying to accomplish. When i first heard Mato, he made me want to run to my guitar and start trying to play like him and that's the true sign of a guitar great in my book.

In the late 1990s, a whole slew of young guitarists emerged, all making a grab for the Stevie Ray Vaughan mantle. In this group, one must include Mato Nanji, guitarist for the family venture Indigenous. Unlike many of his predecessors, Mato Nanji may actually be deserving of the honor. That's a bold statement, but a listen to "Begin to Wonder," the instrumental "Holdin' Out," or especially "Nothing I Can Do" off of Things We Do are sufficient to justify it. The album opens with the low-key, midtempo title track, but it's on "Got to Tell You" that Things We Do really hits its stride. On the whole, this CD is a very strong effort, especially for musicians still in their early 20s. --Genevieve Williams
