Summary: after so long
Comment: I have been listening to FS for a long time and still this is the only album of his I have. Its an extraordinary statement to claim Only The Lonely a perfect piece of art but thats my feeling - judging by other reviews I'm not alone - Ive discarded the last two tracks from my ipod since they are obviously from another plan - and just whats the problem with the art work folks?! If you havent heard the album get it NOW!

Summary: Frank could have sung 'em all--and we'd have stayed all night !!!
Comment: Frank Sinatra Sings For Only the Lonely is a beautiful album of songs sung by the immortal Frank Sinatra; the sound quality couldn't be better! I would ignore that AWFUL artwork on the front cover, though. It's the worst artwork I've ever seen--and for a Sinatra CD that's a true shame.

"Only The Lonely" starts off the track set with Frank singing very sensitively about lonely people and the universal need for love and companionship. The piano arrangement is very elegant and this is a beautiful number to start the album. "Angel Eyes" is at its best when Frank delivers this with all his heart and soul; I love every minute of it and I could listen to Frank sing "Angel Eyes" all the time without any complaints! Frank sings "Angel Eyes" with all the grace of the pro that he was and still remains.

"What's New" has a lush strings arrangement and Frank sings this beautifully. He never misses a beat and his performance proves his superior ability to perform a song in such a superior way that practically no one could ever even hope to match. "Willow Weep For Me" is another melancholy tune that gets the royal treatment from Frank who sings this with great sensitivity. Frank truly showcases his fine ability to touch his audience when he does songs like this one. "Blues In The Night" is easily a major highlight of this album; Frank sings this to perfection--and beyond! "Blues In The Night," a Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer tune, gets a slower than usual tempo here that actually enhances the natural beauty of this ballad. I'm very impressed.

"Ebb Tide" is a song that I'm not too familiar with but when Frank sings it he makes this shine like silver and gold combined! The strings and the harp make the melody very pretty. "Spring Is Here" features Frank squarely in the spotlight--and he uses this opportunity to use his vocal prowess to make "Spring Is Here" a rather beautiful number. "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)" is another Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer tune; and Frank sings this perfectly. I always liked "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)."

"Sleep Warm" is a touching number you're bound to enjoy; and I really like the ending number entitled "Where Or When." "Where Or When" is very elegant and it features Sinatra singing with a piano--what a sublime ending for this album!

Frank Sinatra will never be forgotten; and albums like this will always sell well to prove his talent is immortal. Sinatra fans will enjoy this album immensely; and people who enjoy the blues and other classic pop vocals will appreciate this CD, too.

Summary: His finest studio rercording - No Contest
Comment: Anyone who loves Frank Sinatra and his music knows, by Sinatra's own admission, that this recording is his finest hour in a recording studio. Recorded in May 1958 the songs are sad and his voice is in it's prime. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are wonderful with strings, woodwind and brass all combining to sound beautiful showcasing Sinatra's very gifted talent. The songs, "Gone with the Wind", "Whats New", "Angel Eyes" and "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" are a reflection into the soul of a man who knows about lost love and sadness. The bridge/peak in "Ebb Tide" is magnificent and Frank never sounded better. Nelson's initial introduction to the lyrics/vocal for "Ebb Tide" is the work of a true musical genius. Listen to the master at the top of his game and enjoy this truly great recording.

Editorial Reviews:

Look past the tacky, sad-clown velvet painting on the cover (a Grammy-winner for album design in 1959!), there's nothing cheap or sentimental about this record--the bleakest and blackest album of popular songs ever recorded, so quietly powerful it can leave you slumped in your chair with the ice cubes still rattling in your glass. Every single "suicide song" (as Sinatra liked to call 'em) on Only the Lonely is a stunner that will take your breath away. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are like shadows, almost colorless and motionless, so that all you hear is the ache in the singer's voice. "Angel Eyes" and "One for My Baby" each deserve an album to themselves-- so exquisitely moving that at the end of three minutes you feel like you've just heard a lifetime of loneliness. My only regret--and it's a big one--is that this flawless masterpiece doesn't include Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life," which truly belongs here; Sinatra put it into an already overcrowded recording schedule and, when fatigue and the difficulty of the song defeated him after a couple takes, he gave up and never attempted it again. We got the chillingly lovely "Willow Weep For Me" instead, so I'm really not complaining--but that just adds to the pang of loss that this album expresses so vividly. Drink up! --Jim Emerson
