Summary: IF THIS DOES NOT MOVE YOU TO TEARS, NOTHING WILL
Comment: How in the world can I describe this utterly extrordinary piece of art? I just don't have the words. The history of this piece is now a matter of musical legend: the poor simple tramp singing a reverent ditty over and over with eventual additions of other instruments leading to full orchestra, with the recent add-on of Tom Waits. You do not need to believe here: the gorgeous chordal invectives do it for you, or is this the voice of the divine? Who can know? All I know is that I've never heard anything quite like this. Boring?--Never! 74 minutes long with the same repeating theme? So what--this is just so beautiful that it demands full acuity--same verse after same verse. Mr. Bryars has accomplished something very rare here-- a simple musical phrase, and nothing more, elevated to holiness (sorry- no other word fits). But it is the simple theme of the tramp that does this remarkable thing, maybe somemething that Jesus would have liked very much. Incredibile music in all its respects. Whether you worship Jesus or not, this is probably the finest, most reverent thing that you will ever hear in your life.

Summary: Strange and wonderful
Comment: This piece defies normal categorization. It may drive you nuts or it may creep under your skin into the subconscious. The sleevenotes tell the history behind this highly unusual musical loop that gets built out into a minimalist symphony of sorts.
My only criticism would be that the orchestration could have been rather more varied in places, but that tramp's voice will really get to you.

Summary: Understated and Moving

I first heard this piece three years ago. I was sitting in a darkened classroom. My music appreciation professor introduced it by telling the background story. I was thoroughly expected to be annoyed and disinterested. However, I was far from either. I actually became very emotionally moved. The understated elegance and emotion of the orchestra underscores the pain and hope in the derelict's voice.
The orchestration is simple, repetitive, and at time's easy to overlook. Just like the life of the original singer could be. Yet at times it also holds great jubilation and hope. The mixture of musical principles and emotions is breathtaking and touching. This is simply one of the greatest minimalist works ever created.

This late minimalist, 74-minute piece for orchestra and tape has had, and continues to have, a near-legendary effect on its audience. It's the rare work created specifically to tug gently at one's heartstrings that actually does, and not subtly, either. It starts with a found recording of a homeless man singing a halting, simple melody looped over and over. Then Bryars builds and buttresses this with a full orchestra brought in incrementally, from the first carefully placed short pendulum string sweep to, 10 minutes from the end, the gravelly-voiced singer Tom Waits joins in. It's an obvious but effective work--appealing to all the basics of our emotional nervous system, but still tragically beautiful. --Robin Edgerton
