Customer Rating: Summary: If you like acoustic blues....This is the real thing. Comment: My favorite Hot Tuna album, and absolutely, as one reviewer noted, one of the best albums of all time.
Finger-style blues is a truly American art form, and no one has ever paid homage to the old Delta and Piedmont and Texas bluesmen better than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady.
Period.
A suggestion for lovers of this type of music:
HT still tours constantly, now with a mandolin player (the incredible Barry Mitteroff), and an excellent young drummer....The acoustic shows they put on are always top-notch, and the electric are rockin'...
Go see em'.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good, really good... Comment: Really strong, acoustic-oriented blues from Jefferson Airplane's lead guitarist and bass player. I only rated it "4" because my taste runs more toward a "heavier" sound which you can find on their later efforts. Bottom line: if you are a fan of the blues, a fan of acoustic-based rock this is a really good album...
Customer Rating: Summary: Hot Tuna is Hot ! Comment: Having been a fan of Hot Tuna since 1971 their first album is as all Tuna's albums....Great!
Jorma and Jack created together a sound like no other....when I first heard HotTuna I was sold what a sound!
It was after finding out that Jorma and Jack were the guitarist and bassist for Jefferson Airplane that I really went wild as I thought the Airplane stunk bigtime and still do ....It says even more for the Tuna that they had been playing the boring airplane music when the whole time they had this in their back pocket!Favorites on this album are " Come Back Baby " " True Religion " I suggest to you that Tuna are unique and a fantastic " Roots" sound that will leave you begging for more....buy every cd I mean this the music is tops and they get into some serious hard rock as they progress.......
Hot Tuna the album is first class and It is a great place to start your Tuna ....for me the music is the best!
Customer Rating: Summary: Five stars (plus a couple more) Comment: The first Hot Tuna album - and the best. It's even more interesting than the original vinyl with the addition of a few more cuts. Highlights here include the boys' interpretation of blues classics like "Hesitation Blues" and "Death Don't Have No Mercy."
Customer Rating: Summary: Hot Tuna's best work Comment: First time I ever heard this album, my brother had taped a copy along with possibly Burgers or Electric--First Pull Up, Then Pull Down on the B-side of the cassette he'd used; he borrowed the LPs from the Middlebury College radio station where he did a Saturday-evening DJ shift. I credit (or blame!) my brother for a lot of the music I now listen to and love--he got his hands on some really classic stuff while DJing at WRMC-FM, and it fired my imagination. If Hot Tuna's music could have so inspired the 18-year-old boy I was back then to expand his musical horizons, just think what it could do for you...
I haven't yet bought this newly expanded version of Jorma and Jack's first album together--recorded in September of 1969 at the New Orleans House in Berkeley, CA, I maintain that it sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday; it's just that timeless--but plan on getting it fairly soon. Their version of "Hesitation Blues" blows every other version away, no question about it. For me, the circle was completed just three weeks ago when I finally had the opportunity to see Hot Tuna live at the Mahaiwe Theatre in Great Barrington, MA; my wife and I arrived late and we missed their acoustic set, but got to witness them in their electric glory. (Unfortunately, I was still healing from a root canal earlier that week, and the electricity set my teeth on edge--very unpleasant when your mandibular nerves are irritated--but I hope to get the chance to see them again, pain-free next time round.) Although Jack and Jorma are in their 60s now, they have lost none of their power or ability, or yet their wry sense of humour. If they're playing near you tonight, I highly recommend you RUN, don't walk, to that theatre's box office and buy your tickets without hesitation (or the blues thereof). You won't regret it!
