Summary: One Of The All-Time Puzzles
Comment: In the days of the single 45 rpm release R&B artists would have given their eye teeth for a # 10 Billboard Pop Hot 100 as opposed to a # 1 R&B simply because the Pop charts represented a much larger buying public. It was also not uncommon to see R&B artists doing repeatedly well on both charts with each release.
Phyllis Hyman, following her first R&B hit in 1976, Baby (I'm Gonna Love You), a # 76 for the Desert Moon label, chalked up three more for Buddah in 1977, eight for Arista from 1978 to 1983, three for Philadelphia International from 1983 to 1986, one for Columbia in 1990 [Sacred Kind Of Love - by Grover Washington featuring Phyllis Hyman], another that same year for Startrak [Obsession - by Lonnie Liston featuring Phyllis Hyman], four for PIR/Zoo from 1991 to 1992 and two more in 1995/96 with one in between for MoJazz [Remember Who You Are - by Norman Connors featuring Phyllis Hyman], and her last two for Philadelphia Int'l in 1998.
That's 26 charted songs on the R&B charts, fifteen of them Top 40, including the # 1 Don't Wanna Change The World in 1991, AND NOT ONE OF THEM MADE THE Billboard Pop Hot 100, nor for that matter the Adult Comtemporary charts!! What makes this even more ludicrous is when you simply listen to her mellow, beautiful voice.
Very hard to understand, and you have to wonder if that wasn't a contributing factor to her tragic suicide on June 30, 1995 at age 44. She deserved better, which you can determine for yourself just by listening to the sample audios offered.
In this 2-disc compilation her hits are represented by tracks 1-7, 1-10, 1-11, and 1-14 [B-sides on disc one are tracks 5 and 12], and 2-1, 2-4, 2-7, 2-13 and 2-14 [with B-sides at tracks 5 and 12].
One of the strangest episodes in the history of North American music. I just love her voice.

Summary: PH definitely has got true vocals
Comment: A legend that could definitely outsing a few people, Phyllis Hyman had one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard. When I learned news of her passing, I was devastated. Everytime I hear one of her songs on the radio, I get goosebumps. She certainly had a beautiful voice, and not too many singers that are out right now give her the credit that she deserves.
