Summary: The Legend at the End of his Incredible Career
Comment: Nearly a decade after the Frank Sinatra-Quincy Jones collaboration, L.A. Is My Lady, comes this syrupy, Phil Ramone-produced tribute to the iconic American entertainer.

With 13 selections and the same number of guests - including Bono, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett and Natalie Cole - it is a concept which showcases the incredible musical impact of Sinatra over seven decades. Unfortunately, his health was in decline by this time and the duets were performed to Sinatra's pre-recorded vocal parts over a telecommunications link.

There remained great demand for material by "The Chairman of the Board;" it reached to number two on the Billboard albums chart and number five in the UK, while selling more than three million copies in the United States.

The cover art is a specially-commissioned painting of Sinatra by LeRoy Neiman and is a wonderful depiction of the star when he was at the top of his game. But this CD is a painful reminder that time and age could not make these sessions live up to the advanced billing of, "The Recording Event of The Decade."

Summary: frank sinatra duets - excellent buy
Comment: i purchased FRANK SINATRA "DUETS AND DUETS 2". "DUETS" IS A BARGAIN AT TRIPLE THE COST. SONG #6 SINATRA AND TONY BENNETT "NEW YORK NEW YORK" IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE CD BY ITSELF. MUST HAVE ITEM. EXCELLENT. "DUETS 2" IS GREAT IF YOU LIKE SINATRA. BY WHATEVER YOU DO, BUY "DUETS"!!!

Summary: This Aint Sinatra
Comment: I love Sinatra. I own all the albums. But this album won't do. With very few exceptions (Tony Bennet comes to mind), the people who are singing with Frank aren't fit to wipe Sinatra's boots. Bono isn't even good enough to park Sinatra's car. The only reason I give this album two stars is because I realise that it might have turned a few people onto Sinatra who hadn't previously listened to him.

Summary: Don't start your Sinatra collection here!!!
Comment: It pains me to think how many people have probably never heard a Sinatra album apart from this one -- or worse yet, heard this and, based on how weak it is, decided not to explore further. It's one thing to hear the 78-year-old Frank in less than stellar voice, because he can make magic even with the limited tools at his disposal. "One For My Baby" (which is unfortunately attached to Kenny G's insipid tootling on an instrumental "All The Way" in a medley of sorts) is one of the most moving performances of his entire career. It's also the only track on which he sings alone.

The duet partners on the other dozen tunes, at best, do nothing to make the songs better, and at worst, drag them down horribly. Luther Vandross, Bono, Luis Miguel, Liza Minnelli and the others are all fine singers on their own, but they don't belong on a Sinatra album. There's precious little chemistry here between Frank and any of his duet "partners," which isn't surprising considering none of them were recorded in the same room.

If you're a Sinatra completist, you should own this CD. If not, you should think twice before picking it up -- especially if you don't already own his brilliant Capitol and Reprise recordings from the '50s and '60s (the '40s stuff on Columbia is great, too). And if you can find it, try to get hold of "Duets For One," a bootleg CD featuring 15 of Sinatra's "Duets" recordings without the overdubbed pseudo-duets. As a document of his last studio recordings, it's pretty great, and we can only hope that one day it will be released officially.

Editorial Reviews:

Start spreading the news. Frank Sinatra has returned to the recording studio for the first time in 15 years, and he's bringing along some friends, including Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Anita Baker, Bono, Kenny G and Liza Minnelli.
