Customer Rating: Summary: Not what I ordered Comment: I ordered a Nat King Cole CD and I got a complete different artists. Not cool.
Customer Rating: Summary: fine collection of Nat's greatest hit singles Comment: Nat King Cole remains a huge influence on today's younger artists--and rightly so. Nat King Cole could take a classic number and sing it as if it were the world's most beautiful and freshest ballad--ever. His voice on this CD is consistently energetic and full of masculine warmth; and the songs on CD represent a collection of Nat's greatest hit singles.
The CD starts with the mesmerizing ballad "Unforgettable." The piano and percussion work wonders for the arrangement; and Nat's voice is smooth as silk. Nat King Cole truly sings "Unforgettable" most passionately and it shows in his delivery. Awesome! "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66" follows; the tempo picks up for a pleasant change--the beat encourages you to dance and celebrate Route 66 as if it were the ONLY way to travel cross country! SMILE
"Mona Lisa" reverts back to a much more romantic style that takes its time to develop into a classic ballad. Nat performs this with a great deal of sensitivity; and the strings enhance the beauty of this number. Great! "Straighten Up And Fly Right" gives us a younger sounding Nat King Cole singing and playing piano as part of his trio--wonderful! They harmonize to perfection and Nat's piano playing never misses a beat! Love it! Great musical interlude, too.
"(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" showcases Nat's ability to deliver a classic love ballad without a superfluous note. The musical arrangement remains simplistic with its reliance on the piano; and this works to highlight Nat's voice as he sings "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons." I predict that you will enjoy this number very, very much.
"Ramblin' Rose" features Nat with a late 1950s/early 1960s arrangement and the chorus harmonizes well as Nat sings. Nat's more mature voice is slightly gravelly--but somehow this serves to enhance his performance. Another special number is "Those-Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days Of Summer;" this also features a more mature Nat King Cole with a relentlessly upbeat melody that will be infectiously catchy to your ears. The backup chorus works to bolster this number, too.
"Smile," which was written in part by Charlie Chaplin, gets the royal treatment from Nat King Cole; he proves himself to be a master as he sings "Smile" flawlessly. The musical arrangement makes good use of the flutes and strings; and when the horns come in softly you know this is another masterpiece! "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" also features Nat King Cole at his best in his more mature years. The arrangement sports an early 1960s flavor to it and Nat sings this without missing a beat.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Interestingly enough, the last track on this CD is not a duet that Nat recorded. Instead we get a studio mixed duet with Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie joining in; the mixing simulates the effect of them doing a duet. Although they did not actually perform this ballad together; the superb mixing makes you forget that rather quickly. The father-daughter duet of "Unforgettable" provides a strong ending for this album.
The liner notes include the song credits and recording dates; I would have liked an essay but this is a minor disappointment. The photographs of Nat with his trio and daughter Natalie show good taste.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Nat King Cole, the Nat King Cole Trio and classic pop vocals. Get this CD--you won't be disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: Romantic Night for Listeners Comment: This old stand by is a must for a guy's collection.
Nat's smooth, spacious voice fills the room with electric sparks and coziness together. I find it's one of my most worn out CDs that I own. I don't only listen when I'm alone with my girl. I also listen if I've had a pretty agitating day.
He has an effect on his listeners that time could never fade.
A must have!
Customer Rating: Summary: Where's Stardust!!!!?????????????????????????? Comment: This CD has beautiful tracks - my favorites being the two Unforgettable tracks. But how can a Nat King Cole Greatest Hits recording NOT have Stardust?!?!?! That's Unforgivable!
Customer Rating: Summary: Good, but not great Comment: These are some excellent songs, but the sound quality wasn't the best. I thought that they should have added some of his other songs and took out a few on the track listing. THe final track, the duet with his daughter, was beautiful and eery all at once. Perhaps it was me, but his voice sounded almost ghostly when I heard it. I couldn't imagine the emotions she was feeling, singing a duet with her passed on father (I also can't imagine why she would agree to, but that's another story). This album isn't bad, but I wouldn't say greatest.

You could fill box set after box set with Nat "King" Cole's work--and those are certainly out there--and never hit a less-than-stellar note. But for the creme de la creme, it'd be hard to fault this career-spanning, 22-song retrospective. From the swinging jump blues of "Straighten Up and Fly Right" to the easy lope of his definitive "Route 66" to the lush balladry of "Mona Lisa," every facet of the great singer-pianist's is explored. Bookended by Cole's original version of "Unforgettable" and his posthumous duet with daughter Natalie, this collection provides an ideal introduction to--or a stirring reminder of--Nat "King" Cole's legacy. --David Sprague
