Customer Rating: Summary: YOU GOTTA CHECK THIS TECHNIQUE Comment: This is perhaps the most under rated work Rakim has ever done. Yeah, the first few LP's he made with Eric B. are classic, but this honestly deserves the same respect.
Rakim is arguably one of the greatest MCs to bless the mic, and he more than blesses it on this last release he did with Eric B. He covers a wider range of topics than he did on the three albums he did before this (which are absolutely amazing as well.) The topics include; povery, war, education, street life, and of course boastful rhymes about himself (which he deserves to do.) His story telling skills shine like the sun on this - "What's On Your Mind?" "Teach The Children" "Casualties Of War" "What's Going On" and my personal favorite "Know The Ledge" - here's a link to view the video...

The production by Eric B. isn't as memerable as his earlier work, but it still molds well with Rakim. The beats do a great job of epitomizing the era that they were made in. They're better than what alot of people were making at the time.
All I can say is, if you're a fan of Rakim, or Hip Hop - you absolutely need this album. If you're wondering why I love this so much, pay attention to the well crafted lyrics. Rakim deserves all the credit people give him, but if you ask me, I say he deserves more.
Customer Rating: Summary: 4.5 stars: The end of an era for Eric B. & Rakim................ Comment: Top Joints:
Dont Sweat The Technique
Whats on Your Mind
The Punisher (Hard)
Keep The Beat
Know The Ledge (Classic)
Customer Rating: Summary: Breakbeat Jazz and Spoken Word Comment: People have been wondering how to combine estranged cousins Jazz and Hip-Hop. Here you have it: a jazz-influenced guru of rap, looped jazzy breaks from one of the best beat makers of the day.
Ra's voice flows through each piece like an expert jazz trumpeter; his timing is immaculate, his vocabulary superb, and his tone smoother Cannonball Adderly. THIS is how rap is done.
Or how some fine hip-hop is done.
This CD spawned two hip-hop classics: Know the Ledge and Don't Sweat the Technique. Listening to Know the Ledge will keep you honest, because Rakim is no lightweight compared to modern legends like Nas and Eminem. You have to respect the flow.
Other points of interest is Teach the Children, What's Going on, and the the opener, What's on Your Mind.
Perhaps clueless jazzers looking to update their medium shouldn't just take a hip-hop beat and noodle aimlessly and call it art. The compositional possibilities shown on this album, along with the amazing lyricism exhibits what jazz and hip-hop could procreate.
Customer Rating: Summary: Eric B and Rakim at their Best Comment: The choice of an acoustic bass, drums, and saxaphone as the groove and harmony for this record was an excellent choice. The song starts with a jazz harmony executed in a dance/soul rhythm. For "opponents" of this song's lyrics "it might take years." The lightning fast tempo yet subtle and relaxed phrasing Eric B brings to the song when he raps complements his sonic lyrical insights and the hard grooving feel of the record.
P.S. I am not sure, but in the video for this song, I think that might be Wyclef Jean playing the acoustic bass.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Epitome of the Word CLASSIC Comment: The word classic gets thrown around a lot in reviews, especially for Rappers and MCs who by no means come close in comparison! Don't Sweat the Technique is a CLASSIC!!! Masta Killas No Said Date is NOT. If you want REAL HIP HOP MUSIC, what better LP is there to give you the blueprint of it. From Lyrics to Beats this was incredible.
