Summary: Great breakthrough for a great band
Comment: Finally, a breakthrough! An exquisite album: one of the best of 1991, in fact. And there was all kinds of good music put out in the grand year of 1991. It's funk! It's metal! It's rap! It's all of them! Woo-hoo! A winning combination there. I still think this is a slightly overrated album: I prefer Californication and Stadium Arcadium. Let's get back to the point here, though: the sheer coolness of several of these more obscure songs is off the charts (to say nothing of the hits. We'll get to those later). "If You Have to Ask" is an example. Anthony's low-key rapping, in a deep voice, which he sadly would never reuse, isn't much different than the stupid songs from Freakish Stupidity, but it's so much better! Flea's bass line is much improved, and the guitar solo is a jaw-dropper. And "Funky Monks"... that's my jam, yo. A song titled "Funky Monks" had better be sweet, and it fulfills all its title promises. So does "Mellowship Slinky in B Major", which has my pick for the best chorus on the album ("Good god! Ah-purple haze now!" and the like). "My Lovely Man" is about Hilel Slovak. Again, it's funky! And the guitars are so good! My favorite song, though, obscurity or hit, is "I Could Have Lied". It wasn't released as a single, which is a shame, because everything about it is melodic. The distorted guitar solo is melodic. The line "I'm f***ed-up now" is melodic, okay? Sure, it's just a melody and a sweet guitar solo, but there's a lot of power in the song's simplicity. And "Sir Psycho Sexy" has hilariously tasteless, way over-the-top, not-intended-for-kids lyrics. I think it's a bit overrated myself: the last two minutes that everyone else seems to love so much strike me as repetitive. Then there are those four inescapable hits. "Give It Away" is their best funk song! Listen to the bass! And the lyrics! No, it's not about what you think it is: there are references to sex, yes, but also to giving blood, to world peace, and to Bob Marley. A whole verse about Bob Marley! In other words, it's about nothing. "Under the Bridge" also has a deceptive title: I thought it was supposed to be a neo-"Under the Boardwalk", but really it's a gripping testimonial about Frusciante's drug problems with a killer guitar riff and a striking video. It's also the group's most recognized song, and why not? "Breaking the Girl" probably may make you think that it's about abuse, but in truth, it chronicles a dying relationship. It's got a memorable chorus, and a flute! That's right, a flute! And it sounds amazing! Lastly, "Suck My Kiss" is exactly what you think it's about. It's the weakest of the singles, but it makes me dance and shake my butt, which was the intention. And some dreary, blah-ish songs. "Apache Rose Peacock"; "Naked in the Rain"; "The Righteous and the Wicked" and "The Greeting Song" all sound quite a lot like "Mellowship Slinky" or "Funky Monks" (or "Give it Away"), and I don't really like any of them. "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" itself is a totally unoriginal sex jam. The only cool part is the deep-voiced rap, which even then sounds better on "If You Have to Ask". And "They're Red Hot"... what's up with that? So it's good, very good, often fantastic, but it can't keep the fantasticness up enough to get a higher rating than four stars. Not that four stars are bad or anything...

Summary: What can I say that hasn't already been said?
Comment: I'm not going to get into too much detail about all the many qualities of this album, because I think many of the other reviewers have probably said it better than I could. But I will say that this album isn't only in my Top 5 desert island picks, but it occupies the coveted #1 spot. And this is from someone who thinks music is the ultimate life force and owns hundereds of CD's, many of them count among history's greatest recordings. But BSSM speaks to me somehow. Its raw, yet refined. Playful and funky, yet full of aggression and energy.

As much as I love Hillel Slovak on Uplift Mofo Party Plan, I must say - the Chili Peppers without John Frusciante just aren't the same band. I even have a lot of respect for Dave Navarro both as a guitarist and an innovator of alternative rock...but the RHCP albums that Frusciante played on- Mother's Milk, BSSM, Californication, By the Way, and most recently Stadium Arcadium are all something special. BSSM and Californication will forever be the albums that first defined the band, and then pulled them out of certain self-destruction. Both masterpieces. There's really not a bad song on this record.

Editorial Reviews:

With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc Greilsamer
