Customer Rating: Summary: essential - one of the best of all time Comment: I dropped a lot of acid listening to this, traveling to and fro the beach with my peeps, this album playing in the car stereo.
I recently listened to it sober and now realize why I gravitated towards it, and so often as a youth.
It embodies the animalistic desire to free oneself from conformity, and the self, and the confines of the establishment. This was alternative before it became mainstream, hackneyed. Never before has a rock group been so adept, and never since.
Customer Rating: Summary: mixed feelings Comment: A lot of people describe this album as having elements of funk. I don't hear that as much as I hear Led Zepplin like guitar. On certain songs I hear them trying to be funky but it comes across like a distorted JEAN LOVES GEZEBEL than anything else. Please ladies and gents don't get me wrong! I have respect for this, but overall this is just to loud for me and I don't mean artsy loud like JESUS AND MARY CHAINS' PSYCHOCANDY but annoying "turn down that music" loud. So start with Ritual De La Habitual it blends the loud and better grooves.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bold Charismatic Lyrics with Exploding Guitar Melodies Comment: Although the band's image and ideas are at times overblown and their lyrics pretentious, Jane's Addiction's musical chemistry is nothing short of AMAZING. Maybe it's because the members were constantly buttin' heads. That added to their intensity, I don't know, but they ended up being one of the most influential bands of the early '90's with their sound of bold alternative to metal sound.
Singer Perry Farrell's vocals were bold, charismatic and witty, fitting perfectly with guitarist Dave Navarro's unique exploding guitar melodies. "Nothing Shocking" was Jane's Addiction's first major label release. You hear their dreamy and epic qualities on "Up The Beach", "Ocean Size", and the more straightforward "Had A Dad". Some of the best bands' rockers on this album are "Mountain Song" and the ever-so popular ballad of "Jane Says" about a sad junkie prostitute, which ended up becoming one of Jane's Addiction's signature songs.
Customer Rating: Summary: Still very current Comment: Having heard for the first time this album around 20 years ago , and seeing how it continues to be a solid production that still manages to please us after , 20 years .
One of the most amazing things that music can do , is that after an extended period of time - still be listenable . That's the case with this album for me . We all have different tastes and preferences , but after seeing other bands and their albums not stand the test of time , and fizz out or not be a hot product , it s definitely worth what productions we think are the ones thats till blow us away .
This whole album is solid , strong and without low points . It s true that Janes style doesnt reach all audiences , probably . But the arrangements & songs are so catchy , deep and beautifully done that it should receive a well deserved praise by its fans , old & new .
Please dont think ' Where does this guy , being from Chile know so much about this group ? ' . I lived i the US from 1985 - 1999 . between the ages of 10 - 23 . So that really important stage in our lives , I lived w you up there , and have some of the most powerfully positive memories from those years up there .
What would i recommend from Chile that is up the level of Janes ? Los Blops , a group that mesmerized Chile from 1970 to 1973 . 3 albums , staggeringly good tunes . Just like Farrell , Pearcy , Avery and Navarro
Customer Rating: Summary: Standing in the shower thinking.... Comment: I'm thinking this is an awesome album. One of the best efforts of the 80's by any band.

Though the songs aren't quite as good as those on Ritual De Lo Habitual, this album is much more consistent, with a heavy rock-funk-punk mix that's a pleasure to hear. The slower songs (especially "Summertime Rolls" and "Jane Says") work well, while the up-tempo material--in particular the closer "Pig's in Zen"--is both catchy and ambitious. It's a fine album overall, and if the band's Zeppelin-ward aspirations don't quite work, their music is still quite good in its own right. --Genevieve Williams
