Customer Rating: Summary: Blue Comment: Joni Mitchell-Blue *****
Joni is an acquired taste, their is no way around it. But with her being an acquired taste how is then that she is essential. It's a head scratcher. But the fact is, some people cannot stand the lady's voice, which is sad because it truly is a beautiful and unique voice. But the truth is people either hate it or love, there is no middle ground. But this, her 1971 masterpiece Blue, is easily one of the greatest and most important albums of all time. Along side Carole King's Tapestry are the two single greatest singer/songwriter albums of all time. While James Taylor and Stephen Stills may have lent hands to some of the material Blue is mainly a lonely melancholy album both literally and figuratively.
This may be the greatest break-up album of all time. Songs like 'California' 'Carey' and 'This Flight Tonight' show a vulnerability of Joni that we never saw before and that she would never come close to again. She was quoted as saying when she recorded and wrote this album she felt as transparent as cellophane, for the whole world to see everything, and that really comes across in the music. Even her wonderfully underrated guitar playing sounds tortured.
Yes Joni would go on to make more ambitious albums, and albums that would sell far more copies then Blue, but the simple fact is that as a whole, Joni would never, ever make another album that would even come close to the power of Blue. Essential
Customer Rating: Summary: She's simply sublime Comment: I've got quite a few Joni Mitchell CDs in my collection now - every one of them treasured - but I've only just gotten round to buying this one, even though I've known for some time that it's considered far and wide to be one of her best albums (if not her best album ever).
Well, I'm already in love with it. What struck me the most about the album, after just a few listens, is how intimate it sounds. For the most part it is just Mitchell singing along to guitar (sometimes performed by James Taylor, sometimes Steven Stills) with some percussion by Russ Kunkel on some songs, and to piano (presumably performed by Mitchell herself) on others. I so got into the intimacy of the music that when some songs (like "Carey") that introduced backing vocals, and others (like "California" and "This Flight Tonight") that introduced Pedal Steel came along, I almost found the extras intrusive. (I got over it eventually, of course).
It's probably totally ridiculous but it was almost as if I felt she was singing just to me, FOR me, in a space that was occupied by just the two of us. I loved how that felt and still feels, every time I play the disc. Her singing style is amazing and amazingly unique. She sounds as free as a bird, going high and going low seemingly at will and seemingly without effort. I imagine her songs would be very difficult to cover, so much respect to the singers who performed on the Herbie Hancock CD I reviewed prior to this one. She sings of simple things yet her lyricism is as rich as a fruitcake. She's simply sublime.
The only other thing I'd like to add is this: if people are still buying and talking about your album 37 years after it was first released, you ought to know you've done something right. If it's a non-jazz album then as far as I'm concerned, you've accomplished something phenomenal. This album is phenomenal. Every home should have one.
Customer Rating: Summary: Blue is Beautiful Comment: Joni Mitchell has to be one of the VERY best writers - And how wonder-full she's also one VERY talented musician!
While there have continued to be individual songs by Joni Mitchell that I have particularly enjoyed throughout the years after the release of "Blue", ALL of the songs on this albumn have remained my personal favorites.
(I'll concede Robert Downing Jr. did a credible rendition of "River" way back when on a popular tv show - But I am actually put off by the recent remake.)
For those not familiar with the one and only original artist -
I recommmend this albumn to anyone who is interested in discovering the full range of "flavors" Ms. Michell offers.
Customer Rating: Summary: Joni fanboy here! Comment: Joni Mitchell is a beautiful singer, and contains a beautiful voice. Furthermore, she has a beautiful variety and distinct sound to her music. Are you getting tired of hearing me say the word "beautiful"? No other word will work, sorry.
Why radio stations completely ignore this masterpiece I'll never understand. A quality album that triggers some of the strongest emotions a human being can possibly have.
There's a reason everyone likes Joni Mitchell. When you combine a perfect voice with perfect range to a distinct style of songwriting, you can't lose. Justin Hayward from the Moody Blues said he loves Joni's music, and that's another reason to check out this album. I can see why. Both singers have an amazing range and melodic style that pleases me on a personal level.
Now you know what you have to do. You have to pick up the Blue album and enjoy one of the greatest musical achievements of the 70's.
Customer Rating: Summary: Joni Mitchell Blue CD Comment: I recently ordered this CD and was pleased with the condition and how quickly I received the item.

Joni Mitchell would go on from this '71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as "All I Want," "Carey," "California," and "A Case of You" work equally well as poetry and pop music. --Steve Stolder
