Customer Rating: Summary: OH! PLEASE Comment: THIS ALBUM IS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE REST OF ZEPPELIN. SO IT NOT THE REGULAR ZEPPELIN SOUND. IT SHOW THEY HAVE GOT TALENT TO DO ANYTHING OR ANY KIND OF MUSIC THEY WANTED TO DO BECAUSE THEY ARE,AM,ALWAYS WILL BE A FANTASTIC BAND WITH THE BRASS BALLS TO DO IT ANYWAY THEY WANT TO.
THIS IS FOR THE "zep" HEADS. HOW MANY DIFFERENT ALBUM COVERS WHERE RELEASED UNDER THE PAPER BAG? ANY GUESSES, I KNOW BECAUSE I'VE GOT THEM ALL!
Customer Rating: Summary: An Interesting Sonic Departure For Zep Comment: Here we go:
1. In The Evening - Great album opener. I believe this was Jimmy's first use of a whammy bar on a Zep song, and he incorporates it seamlessly. It's organically part of the music rather than a noise maker as it would become with the later 80's metal bands. Great singing by Plant, driving rhythm, and a sweet solo by page. The song also features a gorgeous and lush interlude that breaks the song up beautifully before it kicks back in with the driving rhythm. One of my favorites on the album.
2. South Bound Suarez - I like this song. It's got a great sort of happy up feel to it.
3. Fool In The Rain - My favorite tune on the album. This song has everything you could want in a late period Zep tune. Catchy lyrics, great Latin style breakdown in the middle of the song, and a fantastic solo by Page, probably one of his best. This was the hit off the album and with good reason. This song puts a smile on my face every time I hear it. One of my favorite Zep tunes of all time.
4. Hot Dog - What made Zeppelin such a fantastic band was their constant experimentation with different sounds and different styles of music. They weren't afraid to try anything, whether it be blues, acoustic, jazz, rock, folk etc. Hot Dog is straight up chicken pickin style country. A quirky little number, but not one I listen to very often.
5. Carouselambra - Oh boy, too long and pretentious, and boring! I dare you to listen to this song from start to finish and either not fall asleep, or not have your mind wonder. I can't make out the lyrics, as Plant seems to sing this one with marbles in his mouth, and Page is completely lost in the mix. This song is strictly a showcase for John Paul Jones. I always hit the fast forward button when this one comes on to get to the next tune...
6. All My Love - A Beautiful, lush, moving ballad. Sends shivers down my spine and gives me goosebumps every time. This song is absolutely timeless, and one of my all time favorite Zep tunes along with Fool In The Rain.
7. I'm Gonna Crawl - Yep, I'm gonna crawl out of whatever room this song is playing in. I absolutely hate this song. The album loses a full star for this song alone. Pure garbage filler, and I'm not used to Zep throwing filler on their albums.
So the good on this album is really, really good. The bad, pretty bad. I have no problem with experimentation, I'm all for it actually. Just like a lot of "fans" cried foul when Rush started using synths extensively in their music, Zep fans did the same with this album. But my three star rating has nothing to do with the added synths, it has to do with the fact some of the songs on this album just weren't very good. Sad this was their last album together.
I've always wondered what the Led Zeppelin of the 80's would have sounded like. In Through The Out Door is a pretty good indication of where they were headed. Whether it would have been more overblown dreck like Carouselmbra and I'm Gonna Crawl, or In The Evening and Fool In The Rain is anyone's guess. I choose to remember this Zeppelin album for the later rather than the former.
Customer Rating: Summary: Into the 80's Comment: Okay I know some Zep diehards may have criticisms of this album since it may not sound like what they have done in the past, but I think the different sounds and styles on this album are great!! I think it is a preview of what they would have sounded like in the 80's if they would have been able to continue as a band.
Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointing Comment: I listened to ITTOD and Coda for the first time a few months ago. I'd heard that both were not considered anywhere near the quality of Zep's other albums and I have to agree. However, ITTOD is a lot harder to listen to than Coda. 'In The Evening' is.....dull and plodding. Some reviewers say it is classic Zeppelin but I can't agree, I just find it boring. 'South Bound Suarez' is fun; not memorable but definitely fun. 'Hot Dog' is also fun if only to hear Zeppelin do honky tonk. 'Fool in the Rain' another yawn, sorry. I actually like 'Carouselambra' if only for the section where Jimmy lays on those heavy chords; gives the song a bit of gravitas after JPS's bouncy keyboards. 'All My Love' is....nice. It's grown on me a bit but it's hardly SIBLY. And then the best track on the album; 'I'm Gonna Crawl'. Love it; at least the album ends on a high. I've read that Page had some problems at the time which left JPJ and Plant to construct most of the album. JPJ is a wonderful musician and almost as essential to the band as Bonzo was but he's no songwriter as ITTOD shows. Someone said that if the three tracks on Coda that were left off of ITTOD had been on the album it would have been very different and I agree with that too - Ozone Baby, Darlene and Wearing & Tearing would have made ITTOD a fine album. This is all just my opinion of course but I've listened to ITTOD a number of times now and it's just not growing on me. I listen to Coda a lot and enjoy its rawness, something ITTOD sadly lacks.
Customer Rating: Summary: For fans who enjoy Led Zeppelin in wider styles Comment: In all of Led Zeppelin's albums, there are tracks that are not just hard rock. Eg, 'Down By The Seaside' on 'Physical Graffiti', is a song which some fans sneer at, and others sometimes dislike to hear Led Zeppelin go into other areas. Personally, Led Zeppelin were the band who, for me, got me not just listening to rock, but kick started an interest in blues, acoustic and later jazz music. This album truely shows that Led really did go into lots of areas, and is a must for real fans of Zeppelin, who can dip into all of the musical landscapes they covered
The album is a showcase to the talent of John Paul Jones, who took the majority of songwriting for a change, where as on previous albums this role was Jimmy Page's. This instantly gives the album a more different sound, as it is dominated by Jones' synth. and piano. Not that the guitar isn't brilliant, though. Jones on this album takes the band to Rio with a fantastic samba section on 'Fool In The Rain', touches deeply with Plant's affectionate lyrics giving heartfelt touch on 'All Of My Love', and travel to Texas with the light-hearted 'Hot Dog'. The main rock stomp, which in true Zeppelin style is different to a lot of other rock bands, adding woven styled sounds and a guitar that takes you away only the way that Jimmy Page can, 'In The Evening' is another classic, and the other tracks, which dip into Blues and add more synth. make this album what it is: an album only a truely talented band could make, which is different, and takes the listener somewhere else. Sure, a lot of fans call it a bit of downer, and it can be critised, but they don't seem to want to let the band go anywhere different, and dislike the idea of an artist challenging the listener
For the true Led Zeppelin fan: Dare to listen to more than just the earlier albums

Though the band likely didn't know it at the time, this would prove to be the last studio record by one of the most famous rock & roll bands in the world. Drummer John Bonham died shortly after its release. Although nothing compares to early Led Zeppelin--and they lost many longtime fans in the late 1970s--this LP is nothing to be embarrassed by. They were quick to embrace and experiment with synthesizers, and while it wears a little thin by record's end (the synth-bloated "Carouselambra" and the slick AOR hit "All My Love"), it adds a certain majestic tone to the heavy-hitting opener, "In the Evening," and gives a rollicking good-time feel to "South Bound Suarez." Plant's howl and Page's bluesy guitars are in fine form on "I'm Gonna Crawl" and the lilting "Fool in the Rain" recalls the pretty numbers from their early career. --Lorry Fleming
