Summary: Love This Album!
Comment: This is my mellow and happy album. Perfect for sitting on the side of the beach in the Caribbean or just resting at home. The voice is sultry and relaxing and years later I still listen to the album regularly.

Summary: Nearly 13 years after its release and still a favorite
Comment: Here I am listening to Natalie's album nearly 13 years of after its release and the song "River" caught my attention. It took me this long to figure out that this song may be about the death of River Phoenix (yes, I just now paid attention to the lyrics). Still one of my favorite albums of all time.

Summary: Good CD, some of it doens't hold my interest.
Comment: People have opinions on just about everything: Your shoes, clothes, smile, weight, you name it. I have to be honest in that I really have never given a second glance in Natalie Merchants direction. Maybe it was the fact that I looked at the name of the pulishing entity 10,000 maniacs chose to use, and noticed it was anti-christian in nature (of course this was ten plus years ago, they may have changed the name now). At any rate Natalie Merchant was never on my radar screen. Then, out of the blue a former nursing instructor played a song called, "My Beloved Wife" by Ms. Merchant. She was using it as a symbol of emotions many of the elderly in our nation experience when they lose their spouse after 30 years of marriage. Statistics (statistics from 2004) show men over 60 yrs of age who lose a spouse die within a year. Many of these people experience grief that I can only describe as total paralysis of life. Their world as they knew it is over. I watched my grandfather go through this, and may get the displeasure of watching my own father go through this. Many elderly have lost friends already and really have no one else to turn to. I've seen this in my line of work, and I would be lying to you if I said it doesn't grind your heart into the ground at times. "My Beloved Wife" really captures this emotional state of despair well, and given what I know I have to admit everytime I listen to it I get a little choked up. The CD in all is a 4 star (all the songs are at least decent), but "My Beloved Wife" is a 5 star song for sure. If you ever see someone go through a tough loss like this you'll come to the same conclusion as I did; Ms. Merchant nailed the emotional roller coaster of suffering such a great loss. Most move past this and push toward their future. Sadly some don't

Summary: As Beautiful As A Tigerlily
Comment: I was skeptical about this album initially after reading the scathing review Rollin Stone magazine gave it. It just shows that you can't always trust the megalomaniac corporation that that magazine is. Tigerlily is an astounding collection of songs from a woman obviously trying to shake her reputation as band fronter for 10,000 Maniacs. Accomplished and wholly cohesive is the only real way to describe this album, never in a long time have I heard an album where no song deliberately tries to tussle for your attention. Commanding your concentration, "Tigerlily" does seem quite lengthy, but in that length appears some real stellar songwriting. In places the songs are quite charming ("Wonder") but never kitsch. While in others the quality of the whole song is just superb ("San Andreas Fault"). The cover art is amazing although Natalie does look a little dull. "Tigerlily" has a timeless feel to it and sounds distinctly American. There is a story that Aileen Wuornos listened to this album on death row, if so her last years must have been blessed by this pastoral and effectively classic album.

Summary: Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily on DVD-Audio
Comment: This is a very nice sounding version of this album. You have to have a DVD player to play this version, and better yet one that plays DVD-A to get the most out of this specific format.

WHAT I LIKE - It plays at a higher resolution for better sound. You can view the lyrics on your TV and watch a video of song, "Carnival" although it is not in the high-resolution audio format.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE - If you have a 2-channel audio system, your player may not down-convert the multi-channel format into 2-channel stereo sound like you may be familiar with on regular CD. This format seem to have more delay in between tracks than on a regular CD. It took me some getting used to. It's much more of an annoyance with artists that intertwine songs together like Pink Floyd - DVD-Audio will break up these transitions.

Editorial Reviews:

Though the minor hits "Wonder" and "Jealousy" bore a reasonable resemblance to Merchant's work with 10,000 Maniacs, most of Tigerlily clearly established her as a solo artist apart from her former band. The record's first single, "Carnival," drove that point home, with a hook based more on rhythm than melody and the haunting voice of Katell Keineg adding an intriguing dimension to the chorus. Elsewhere, much of Tigerlily is remarkably solemn and subtle, from the low-key opener "San Andreas Fault" to the widower's lament "My Beloved Wife" to the eight-minute opus "I May Know the Word." Also of note is "River," an emotional ode to friend and fallen star River Phoenix. --Peter Blackstock
