Summary: New - old fan
Comment: I was 21 when this came out but was not a big Eagles fan since I was a musical snob and they were a comercial success. When the title track hit the airwaves, I heard a plagerized version of "We Used to Know" by Jethro Tull. It has an almost identical chord progression. But then again, I was a musical snob. Now, in my aged wisdom, I have dropped all the snobbery and have given this "album" a second listen. While it's not in my top 10, it's up there on my list of great albums. I actually always liked "The last resort" for it's message and sonic appeal. I was also a Joe Walsh fan from his James Gang and early solo work (FM radio only!) but never liked his squeaky voice. His brilliat guitar work made up for it. So Walsh on guitar with the other Eagles professionals made for flawless rockin riffs. I also have changed my opinion of "Victim of love". In my snobby days, I scoffed at it's simplicity, being more attracted to complex musical forms, but now.... it has become one of my favorite songs BECAUSE of it's simplicity! (The excellent guitar work helps, too!) Anyway, this old non-fan is now a new fan. I may even go out and get tickets to see the old geezers before they expire!

This is a great CD, and it arrived in great shape. I was happy with my results.

Summary: GREAT masterpiece... terrible re-mastering!!!
Comment: Why are we required to waste our money for expected significant upgrade to the 1970's sound quality... when the improvement is negligible? We should be allowed to get our money back!!!

Summary: Masterfully Standing the Test of Time
Comment: There is truly not even ONE of the 8 main songs on this CD that could be considered weak. I would agree with a previous reviewer that if one was FORCED to identify a song that was less strong than the others, it would have to be the popular hit "Life in the Fast Lane," or perhaps "Try and Love Again."

The remaining 6 tracks are nothing less than masterpieces!

The passage of time is the most true test of quality songwriting. There was a ton of similar genre material during this time period which was considered great at that time (even by me), but upon listening to it now I can only think "Wow, how could we actually have thought this was GOOD??"

For example: I can appreciate a handful of great Styx tunes, but play any of their albums from start to finish, and you'll hear that the majority of their songs now sound sappy, dated, infantile, or just plain BAD.

However, over THIRTY YEARS later, these songs on Hotel California are still amazing: the album still stands as not only The Eagles' best work, but also one of the best Rock releases of all time.

Put on the headphones and turn up the volume for a blissful experience.

Summary: Hotel California
Comment: I've just "rediscovered" this fine album. It remains among the most timeless in all of rock music. The fact that it is still regular price (and not reduced to the el cheapo section) attests to the quality of music herein. I first purchased this on vinyl back when it first came out (1976). The fact that it's sold more than 16 million copies is another statement of the quality of music produced on this disk.

Editorial Reviews:

It's no accident that The Eagles Greatest Hits might one day pass Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time-- the Eagles made great singles. By contrast, their albums could be spotty and strained by self-conscious artistry. Hotel California was arguably the band's best single album--it was certainly the Eagles' biggest original disc-- and it also underscored the band's need to make a big statement. The title tune reflected the album's theme of paradise lost in California, painting this picture with a musical arrangement that punctuated strumming guitars with dramatic drums, and perhaps the band's most famous lyric: "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." "New Kid in Town" was an equally fine albeit much more traditional Eagles ballad. "Life in the Fast Lane" aspired to hard rock but largely gunned its engine without taking off. The rest is okay, but nothing more than secondary Eagles songs that happened to be nestled into the album that came to define the `70s supergroup. --John Milward
