Customer Rating: Summary: Truly *M*A*G*I*C*A*L*! Comment: Donna Summer's LIVE AND MORE cd has got to be one of the best "live" albums out there. I can't possibly add anything that hasn't already been expressed by other reviewers except LIVE AND MORE was recorded at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles, CA in 1978.
And it perfectly captures the frenzied excitement of that concert starting from the opening chords of "Once Upon A Time" to the finale of "Last Dance" and the audience screaming for more.
If you like concert albums/cds than LIVE AND MORE will not disappoint.
I just wish that the powers that be would do a deluxe edition of this cd(i.e. BAD GIRLS).
Customer Rating: Summary: This IS Donna Summer. Without It, You Do Not Understand. Comment: I hear what everyone is saying about the deletion of the incredible & sublime 17-minute "MacArthur's Park" from the recording as it is now available, but this is not the first entirely inexplicably fool-hardy thing big labels have done to major classics-- including not even releasing so many classics at ALL! So what they did RIGHT was to put this most highly touted performance onto CD so that there is just a BIT of the magic of Donna Summer and a musical photograph of a more angelically nurturant time.
We would not have described it that way back then, of course, as there was quite a bit of debauchery and high living that is captured in the sound & mood of the audience, if not in the musical material. But there is a sweetness and a 'giving' in that voice and that good natured, soulful, and sensual delivery that only the Queen could deliver. And up until she sang 'Last Dance' and announced to the world that this was it, she really was the Queen of Dance. If you want to know what that means, THIS IS the cd.
What Summer accomplished after this period had many bright moments, and she was a real fighter, and persevered. But this was about the time before this pretty lady had to put on the boxing gloves and become part of the establishment, as always happens. She was just pure........disco ball light.... sparkling & swirling around. And when "Love to Love You" finally comes on, you are delivered home...until 'I Feel Love' emerges and you are delivered to heaven.
Now THAT'S what I call 'LIVE.....and MORE'! Bring it on Donna Summer. If you don't add this to the collection, not only of your musical library but of your life, you are missing out on what it was all about.
Customer Rating: Summary: live and more Comment: this is one of the best live recordings i've heard even for it being disco, and was also a grammy winner.
Customer Rating: Summary: Donna Summer: LIVE AND MORE (1978) Comment: In 1978, Donna Summer released her seventh album entitled, LIVE AND MORE, an album that features a live concert recorded during her ONCE UPON A TIME Tour. This is an amazing live album. Read on to find out why.
ONCE UPON A TIME
Original version from the album ONCE UPON A TIME... (1977). An awesome performance.
FAIRY TALE HIGH
Original version from the album ONCE UPON A TIME... (1977). Another great performance.
FASTER AND FASTER TO NOWHERE
Original version from the album ONCE UPON A TIME... (1977). Great.
SPRING AFFAIR
Original version from the album FOUR SEASONS OF LIVE (1976). Great performance.
RUMOUR HAS IT
Original version from the album ONCE UPON A TIME... (1977). Great.
ONLY ONE MAN
Previously unreleased. A great song for Donna to perform live in concert.
I REMEMBER YESTERDAY
Original version from the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Great performance.
My Man Medley: THE MAN I LOVE/I GOT IT BAD AND THAT AIN'T GOOD/SOME OF THESE DAYS
Previously unreleased. A great medley.
THE WAY WE WERE
Previously unreleased. This song was originally recorded by Barbra Streisand, back in 1974. This is a great song, and it's amazing how Donna Summer decided to perform this song live, when in a year from this album, both Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer would actually team up to record their 1979 #1 hit duet, "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)". Great performance.
MIMI'S SONG
Previously unreleased. I thought that this is was a very cute performance because she had written this one for her daughter, Mimi. She gives an explanation to it before she begins singing.
TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT
Original version from the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). Great performance.
LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY
Original version from the album LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (1975). Great performance.
I FEEL LOVE
Original version from the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Great song.
LAST DANCE
Original version from the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY (1978). This is a great track.
THEME FROM THE DEEP (DEEP, DOWN INSIDE) (Studio recorded track)
This is a great track. When this whole album was released in 1978, the studio recorded track that was in this spot on the vinyl edition of this album was not "Theme From The Deep (Deep, Down Inside)". The studio recorded track that was in this spot was a track entitled, "MacArthur Park Suite", which is a studio recorded medley, consisting of the following four songs: "MacArthur Park", "One Of A Kind", "Heaven Knows", & "MacArthur Park" (Reprise). The track was left off the CD version of the album, due to time limitations, since CDs can only carry up to 80 minutes worth of music, and it was decided to keep the CD version of this album all on one disc, not two.
This is a great live album, and Donna's voice sounds amazing when she performs for a live audience. This is a great album.
Customer Rating: Summary: Live And More....Exactly What It Means! Comment: "Live And More" (1978) is one of the best albums I have ever heard from Ms. Donna Summer. Let me take you on the journey she led me on:
Tracks 1-6 borrow from her concept album "Once Upon A Time" (1977). Tracks such as "I Love You", "Once Upon A Time", "Faster And Faster To Nowhere", "Fairy Tale High", and "Rumour Has It". The positive part is that all songs were great songs to be heard with out Donna's pure, hard to find in music today, nervous falsetto. They still sound like on the album, anyway. The negative part is that they omitted some of my favorite lyrics from some of the songs and the tempo is rushed a little bit faster as one reviewer previously stated. I noticed this when I was listening to the album versions of the songs above then listening to the live version.
Tracks 8 and 9 and 15 borrow from "I Remember Yesterday" (1977). Also one of Donna's best. Starting with "I Remember Yesterday" a song I and my parents enjoy dancing to because they feel the big band jazz beat along with the lyrics. "Love's Unkind" is my favorite. It tells the story of a girl who is in love with a guy from her school and wants to date him, but he loves her best friend and her dream to dance with him during the high school dance gets crushed. Then, "I Feel Love". The grandmother of all dance/techno/disco/rave just any type of dance music. Wrapped in a 4/4 beat in the style of Silver Convention, it's one of the best disco songs that you could actually base your song on (if you have one to write).
Tracks 10 and 11 show Donna's blues feel and vibe. These are the standout tracks because you can not, I mean can not, find these tracks on any other LP or CD but this one. Starting with the famous "My Man Medley", Donna tells about her man, how she loves the man she loves, then he treats her wrong, then she breaks up with him. I love how she tells the story with her voice. My favorite part of the medley is "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good". Now, "The Way We Were", is another standout track. She performs Barbra Streisand's hit in her sultry voice. It's so nice I sometimes think about the way we were.
Track 12 is the same as tracks 10 and 11. You can not find these anywhere else. "Mimi's Song" is dedicated to her, then 9 year old, Mimi. Sometimes I think if parents who aren't at home at lot change Mimi to their child's name, they could see the difference in themselves. It's sort of funny though, the night before, she wrote the song after Mimi went to bed, and then Mimi comes out to tell her Mummy good night. Now that's a parent who's not to busy to do that.
Tracks 13 and 14 take from Donna's early disco age. Track 13, or "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It" is one of my personal favorites. I especially love the 17 minute version. That's the best part. I love how she speaks to the people during the songs. To the audience. That's really special. I think the tempo's a little bit rushed, just a bit, don't you agree? Track 14, or "Love To Love You Baby" is Donna's mainstream U.S. hit. After 3 years of the song being released, people love it and still love it today. I still do. It's not one of my favorites but it's O.K. for a "special" situation.
The live part closes out with track 16, "Last Dance". It is so better to hear over live vocals than that on the album version. I love to hear the crowd cheering her on and her ad-libs. "C'mon, everybody!" The best version of it to hear though is the promotional version which would be the one found on the "Thank God It's Friday" (1978) soundtrack. It's divided up into it's little parts. Also it's 8:17. Longer play of one of disco's greatest hits wrote by the late Paul Jabara.
Track 17 is the theme from the Deep (1977). It's a good song in it's way but it sounds like she's talking through a megaphone or one of those old Victrola's. It's catchy though.
One laughed at the concept of a live disco album but she did it. Donna is the true "Queen of Disco". Nobody can take her place. She will carry that title to heaven. I love you Donna and hope you love your fans because we all love you.
