Customer Rating: Summary: Sex Machine [Live] Comment: James Brown-Sex Machine [Live] *****
Okay first off, this is by far the best live album the Godfather ever released. Yes, even better than Live At The Apollo(1963), in fact it is much better. That was never one of my favorite live albums, I never understood what the big hype about it was, sure the story is cool but that doesn't make the performance any better. Now this, this is a live album.
All the intensity of Brown's legendary performances is captured. The vocals are audible 100% of the time, the band sounds just plain amazing here. That is the one thing the Apollo album had though was one amazing band, they never sounded so good as they did on that album, but they sound just fine here. Songs like 'I Got That Feelin' and 'Get Up I Feel Like A Sex Machine' come to life like you have never heard them before. Simply amazing performances. 'Give It Up Or Turn It Loose' is powerful. 'Its A Mans World' and the classic 'Please, Please, Please' are the best I have ever heard, and in fact this is the only version of 'Please' I can bare. But what seems to be the best on the album is the closer. 'Mother Popcorn' captured here is easily the best version of the song. Long been my favorite Brown song I have always felt that it would always make the best song to end a concert, and this why.
Sex Machine is a fantastic live, one of the very best of all time. The proof is in the pudding so take a bite.
Customer Rating: Summary: Very disappointing live shots Comment: Only the disc two of the original vinyl album contains real live material, and it's highly disappointing. If you want to hear James Brown at his best, skip this album and buy Live at the Apollo Vol. 2 instead. The studio tracks (6 cuts) were much better, but they are available on many compilations, and you don't really need this album.
Customer Rating: Summary: Ah, James.... Comment: James, you let me down, brother...I thought out of all the people in the world, you were gonna be the one that lived forever. I thought you were immortal, super-bad, and impervious to death. That's okay, man, I forgive you. You will continue to live on in my heart, my mind, and of course, in my soul with your great recordings. I know that wherever you are now, James, you are makin' it funky.
Thank You for blessing my life...
Customer Rating: Summary: The real thing - totally hot, genuine and funky Comment: Maybe the reason i don't like hip-hop is because i heard this album (and many others) by the master of minimalism and soul. James Brown released a lot of hot albums, but this one oozes sweat and energy. That simple. Listening to this album is like standing at a primordial swamp at the dawn of creation: a TON of contemporary black music is directly indebted to and descended from J.B and especially this album. Just *$^@+++$&&!&!~ing buy it already
Customer Rating: Summary: **** Slack Jawed ! **** Comment: As a long time fan of Mr. Dynamite , I have collected a LOT of his recordings, and although I do especially love the Live Apollo shows especially 62 and 67 , THIS recording IMO runs circles around those two. It's the JB's with Bootsy and Catfish Collins and Bobby Byrd and Fred Wesley that make this record SMOKE !.........It's actually from two different dates and two different bands , but it ALL works !!!........If your a fan or a newcomer who wants to hear what " The Hardest Working Man in Showbusiness " is REALLY all about , then pick this record up ........You'll soon understand what all the fuss is about ....Enjoy !

After the legendary Live at the Apollo and the even better Love Power Peace: Live at the Olympia, James Brown could be forgiven if this 1970 live set disappoints. But this is Brother James, so skip the forgiveness. Sex Machine is the bomb, capturing a thrilling moment in Brown's funky revolution. The disc features 12 hot and sweaty, and sometimes slinky, live cuts recorded with the James Brown Band in 1969, plus three more studio jams (including a 10-minute title track) with his next band, the great JB's. "Can I get into it?" James shouts at the top. Oh man--does he even have to ask? --David Cantwell
