Comment: This compilation gives an evolution of Marvin's music. His earlier music was more gritty and hard cutting soul like numbers and many were popish. His voice is very versatile. At some points, he sound like different artists, having not yet developed his own unique style. Eventually on the second disk his signature sound has evolved, where his voice was immediately recognizable.
DISK 1
I absolutely love the song "You." It is by far my favorite. For some reason, it touched and fed my spirit.
Disk 2
God is love. The background vocals sound very much like Curtis Mayfield. There is a Curtis feel and sound to Sad Tomorrow and You're the Man. He even did some James Brown screams in You're the Man. He has the ability to sound different on various tracks. I guess he was just gifted and versatile artist and vocalist. I call most of the tracks easy soul. You know the passion is there, but understated. It is still in the black American cultural musical tradition.
I think my favorite song is Got to Give It Up. I printed out the lyrics, because he fads in and out at some points of the song. I want to know just what he is saying.
I loved all of the tracks, including the one with Diana Ross, My Mistake.
If you value great music, lyrics and music, Marvin is for you.

amazon was a HORRIBLE sound quality. the outside of the cd
said it was done in 'germany'...the sound was hollow and
scratchy. i returned it with a minimal amt of trouble.

Comment: I am not used to writing reviews but I had to for this item. This is the most comprehensive collecion of classics from Marvin Gaye, especially the second disc. He has had such an influence from Soul and R&B to Hip-Hop and continues to be a legendary force in music. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Marvin Gaye album, please go with this one. It will give you a balanced and enjoyable experience with the beauty of his music and will leave you wondering why you hadn't done it sooner. I was 18 when I "borrowed" this album from my mother and don't think she will love it as much as I have consistantly loved it for the past 5 years.

Comment: The track listing for the second disc has been repeated. There are only twenty (20) songs on the second CD, not forty (40).
BTW, great album. This is the best 'best of' collection/ compilation/ anthology of Marvin Gaye's work, outside of the box set.
