Customer Rating: Summary: Type O Negative "October Rust" Comment: Let me start by saying that I'm no newcomer to music. My first album was Led Zeppelin's "Led Zeppelin." I got that album in the summer of 1972 from my "babysitter." She gave it to me for my 10th birthday.
My second and third ever albums were Deep Purple "Machine Head" and Alice Cooper's "School's Out."
I saw Van Halen's debut tour with Black Sabbath in 1978.
I saw the KISS reunion Tour #1 in I think around 1995 or 96, whenever their first retour took off, at the Great Western in LA, CA.
Anyway, I've seen a lot of bands, old and new, and I've been around rock for years.
I'd never heard of this band until a younger friend of mine, 26, turned me on to them about three days ago. He gave me "World Coming Down" and I about crapped my pants. He then gave me this album, "October Rust."
These guys were refreshing in that their sound is unique. That's an understatement. Yes, they remind me of Christian Death or Bauhaus, but I never thought either of those two quite pulled it off, although I have a profound respect for both bands. I guess I could say the same thing for Type O, but just trust me and other reviewers here: If you want something refreshing and original, with a sound that will blow you away, get "World Coming Down," or this album.
I can't give any other review except to say that the goth, gloom hits an all time high here. There are no fast guitar speed metal riffs or berserk drum beats, but the beats immersed me in an incredible world of ebb and flow, up and down, rich, strong, moving ranges. In other words, they never bored me.
If you have never heard anything by this band--you won't be sorry.
By the way, the instrumentals and vocal really do deserve a good system to fully appreciate, and enjoy, this quite unique sound. It's not really something you want to listen to on a boom box. A good set of earphones and a nice transparent mp3 or similar file will do the trick, but to FULLY appreciate the sound, listen to it on a system where you can actually feel the bass and other lows in your chest. I'd not talking about block away volume. In fact, this music doesn't need to be cranked to enjoy it. It just needs a good system to reproduce it's heavy, back beat, slow, full spectrum energy.
Customer Rating: Summary: My favorite from Type O! Comment: This album is hauntingly beautiful. Few are the albums such as this that can bring me to tears.
Fantasic!
Customer Rating: Summary: Type O's Prime Comment: Three years after their masterpiece, Type O Negative releases their 1996 album, October Rust. Although October Rust wasn't as commercially succesfully as Bloody Kisses, it defintley is much better than Bloody Kisses. If Bloody Kisses is a masterpiece, then what would someone call this? Let's see the tracks shall we...
1. Bad Ground- It's a joke intro. Not much need to be said.
2.(Untitled)-A Thank you from the band.
3. Love You To Death-My absolute favorite song from this album, maybe my favorite Type O Negative song. The beginning might fool you due to the piano, but trust me, this song has a drab mood, but is a classin nonetheless. And Pete's vocals are amazing on this one.
4. Be My Druidess-A Very Driving beat to this song makes it perfect. Another highly reccomended song, a shame they almost never play it now.
5. Green Man-Starts out really earthy and with low vocals but then launches into a typical Type O Negative beat. Once again, Peter does an incredible job on vocals.
6. Red Water(Christmas Mourning)-The intro is incredible. Very gloomy song, though even for Type O Negative.
7. My Girlfriend's Girlfriend-The intro makes me laugh with the drums and organ, everyone likes this song a lot, but it doesn't appeal to me much. But still a great song
8. Die With Me-The acoustic sounding guitars are awesome for this song. Another favorite.
9. Burnt Flowers Fallen-Another one that doesn't appeal too much, but this song doesn't sound like it was from 1996, it sounds too ahed of its time, although it doesn't appeal to me that much, it is still an awesome song.
10. In Praise Of Bacchus-I absolutely love this song. The guitars in the beginning are outstanding and so is Pete's Voice. Anyone who buys this album, has to hear this song.
11. Cinnamon Girl-Ah...the Neil Young cover. And it is a great cover. Much more driving than the original, but it still makes you want to sing to it. Type O Negative really makes it their own.
12. The Glorious Liberation Of The People's Technocratic Republic Of Vinnland By The Combined Forces-Eh...nothing much to mention here...just an interlude.
13. Wolf Moon-A Very dark song. As well as the beginning is very dark.
14. Haunted- Amazing way to end an amazing album. Although it's 10 minutes, try to get past that and listen to the whole song.
15. (Untitled)-Goodbye From The Band.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pure Gothic Metal Greatness Comment: Words just cannot describe how much I love Type O Negative and the music they make. These guys are truly one of the best gothic metal bands in my book. Whever I feel like losing myself into a different world with a dark, brooding, yet great beautiful atmosphere, this is definately my band of choice. I really got into Type O Negative when I picked up their 1996 effort "October Rust" which is a fantastic follow up to their 1993 breakthrough masterpiece "Bloody Kisses" (an incredible album BTW), and I quickly fell in love with it. This album just brings tears to my eyes whenever I listen to it.
Everything about "October Rust" is just excellent. I mean the songwriting on here is just amazing, the lyrics are full of pain, loss, death, obsession, despair, depression, and dare I say love as well. The musicianship is just amazing as well. Frontman Peter Steele's vocals are dare I say absolutely heartfelt and downright amazing. His singing voice is very deep yet melodic at the same time. There is no doubt that he is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. The guitarwork by Kenny Hickey is dark, slow, sludgy, brooding, and adds a great feel to the band's sound. Josh Silver's keyboardwork is very atmospheric yet beautiful sounding, and of course drummer Johnny Kelly (his first album with TON) keeps his beats at a slow yet very steady pace.
The albums starts off with the band pulling off a little joke and before you know it, we're immediately thrusted into the real opening song "Love You To Death" which features great piano in the background as well as some dark brooding riffs, spectacular keyboard effects, and wonderful vocals from Peter. This is without question the best song on the album as well as my favorite. Another one of my favorites "Be My Druidess" features a nice groovy drum beat, while "Green Man" has some beautiful accoustic strings at the beginning as well as some touching lyrics dealing with nature and human conditions through the seasons. Other favorites on here include a nice catchy cover of Neil Young's "Cinnaman Girl" "In Praise of Bacchus" "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)" (this one's a real tearjerker), "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", "Wolf Moon", "Die With Me", and "Haunted". Please read on for my song ratings.

Customer Rating: Summary: Love IT to DEATH! Comment: Oh man I love this album soo much I want to be buried with it (without the plastic) when I die and that says a lot cause there isn't much I want to be buried with. I must listen to it atleast once, every day. I find there isn't a weak track on it, Steele's vocals are superb and clear (unlike Life Is Killing Me). In my opinion this seems to be TON's best album for me thus far!
