Customer Rating: Summary: So Many Classics Comment: I wish he and taupin were still writing, singing and producing these types of songs and sound. I think it certainly was Elton at his best. I like many of his newer songs but they don't come close to the sounds and styles of the 70's hits he garnered.
Customer Rating: Summary: This is the way all compilations should look! Comment: Elton John is a rock legend. His music is simply incredible, and he is such an icon that he has even been knighted by the Queen of England. His first compilation, 1974's 'Greatest Hits,' is by a long shot his best.
I own a rare out-of-print version. The one I own is the original vinyl version. That one drops 'Candle Of The Wind' and has the other 10 songs. But I do know the song well, so that's not a problem (for me).
This set spans 'Elton John' to 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.' Surprisingly, 'Tumbleweed Connection' and 'Madman Across The Water,' two of his most popular records of the early 1970s, do not get any representation here, which hurts the compilation a little bit.
'Tiny Dancer,' 'Levon,' 'Burn Down The Mission' and 'Take Me To The Pilot' (from 11/17/70) all would fit nicely here.
But, what's here is excellent. 'Your Song,' 'Daniel,' 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,' 'Rocket Man,' 'Honky Cat,' and 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' all appear here. And, those are my favorite Elton songs, so it works out perfectly!
If you are a fan of the legendary early sides of Elton John, than this set is a perfect set to own. You get 11 legendary tracks for a great price. And the sound quality is excellent, too!
Highly recommended for any Elton fan. ENJOY!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: My First Elton John LP Comment: I bought this when I was 13 in 1974. Greatest Hits are what you buy when you're not sure you're going to like an artist, and back then, I wasn't so sure about this guy. He seemed like a misfit - someone like me at heart, but man, could he play the devil out of a piano! Back then, this was a good representative of what he had done thus far.
Of course, now it's the digital age, and it's ridiculous to buy a CD with only a half-hour's worth of songs on it. These days, you can pick and choose your songs with iTunes and other sources of digital music and make your own compilation that satisfy you and burn it yourself. But I remember a time when music still came out of grooves, when I realized having a record company pick my songs for me was never going to be enough, that I was going to dive into an artist's catalog with both feet, and he was either going to be good enough to sustain my interest or I would move on.
I bought the first 8 studio albums Elton John recorded after this one, and one live album, and I've still got them to this day. This collection is the one that started me on the road to Elton, but it is really not worth getting by today's standards. There are much better Elton John radio hits packages out there. The ridiculous "Rocket Man" number ones package is nearly identical to this one, with later material included.
Customer Rating: Summary: Duh!!!!! Comment: "Buh-Buh-Buh-Bennie and the Jets!" What else do you need to know? This Greatest Hits collection was originally released in 1974, and as an album, it's friggin incredible. Track to track to track, perfectly solid. You don't need any of the newer bullcrap collections of Elton John's work. This is THE ONE. Just buy it already, it's CHEAP! You won't regret it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Yeah, I said I liked Elton John, you got a problem with that? Comment: Hey, I'm a rocker, too - I like me some Stones, some AC/DC, some Aerosmith, some Zeppelin, some Sab, some Guns n' Roses, some Who, some Hendrix and some Cream. But you know, you gotta mellow out sometimes, and that's why I listen to Elton. (Hell, even Axl Rose admitted to being a big fan of his).
Now my man Reg Dwight's been taking a lot of abuse lately, mainly because he's gay (which has got to be the stupidest reason I can think of to criticize a musician). If you're looking to diss the guy just because of that, take it up with him. But I warn you - he's rich. He's probably got ninja bodyguards.
All joking aside, EJ rules. He's capable of writing the perfect pop song, and hey, that piano! He's awesome with piano! Gotta love his voice, too. In other words, very talented man. I'm not a big fan of Bernie Taupin, but hey, Elton's great. This is not the perfect compilation of his work - I'd have liked to see some songs from Madman Across the Water (like the hits Tiny Dancer and Levon), and I don't like Bennie and the Jets. Song just bugs me. Good news is, that's the only bad song here: this has my favorite all-time EJ song (Crocodile Rock, which is the ultimate feel-good tune - come on, how can you NOT like it? It's not possible! I mean, I have heard one person criticize it, but he had the rough intelligence of a cinderblock), as well as several other great ones, mostly ballads like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Your Song (simply the perfect pop song), Candle in the Wind, Daniel, Rocket Man, and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me. Then there are the cool stylistic experiments like the gospelly Border Song (Holy Moses) (off his self-titled second, which I recommend - it's the one with Your Song on it), and the New Orleans-sounding Honky Cat. And who says EJ can't rock? Throw on Saturday Night's All Right (for Fighting) and see if you still think that way.
A couple of Elton's studio LP's are really good too - I'd go with self-titled, Madman Across the Water and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. Those just starting out with him should start her.e

Elton John has always fancied himself a big-theme album artist, but because even his finest albums are spotty, his best moments, with few exceptions, have been singles. Greatest Hits collects nine of them from '70 to '74, plus one of those exceptions, the stirring faux-gospel "Border Song." If you overlook the weightless "Crocodile Rock" and the contrived "Your Song," this album shows why John is a superstar, especially on the big ballads, where collaborator Bernie Taupin supplies some interesting lyrics for his impeccable melodic hooks. The ethereal "Rocket Man" is a marvel despite its goofy premise, and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" remains the greatest pop moment of John's career. --David Cantwell
